Don't miss this unique experience!
Feb 2020
A truly unique experience, wandering through the underground chambers that once made up part of the Jewish ghetto - present since renaissance times, and ending with the fabulously restored synagogue. Good signs in English explaining various Jewish rituals, holidays and traditions, but most of them a bit generic - more interpretation could be added that is specific to Pitigliano and the history of its Jewish population, the persecution and racial laws, the role of the local Catholic community hiding people during fascism, etc.

Very Interesting
Sep 2019 • Couples
The city has a unique story to tell about the Jewish community and the Jewish people that lived here or moved here for their protection prior to, during and after the WW2 period.

Interesting history story and facility.

Must see in Pitigliano
Sep 2019 • Couples
Very well preserved Jewish ghetto in the centre of Pitigliano. A lot of info about Jewish community of Pitigliano. You can see the bath, kosher slaughter house and wine cellar, kitchen, Synagogue and read about life of Ghetto inhabitants who lived there from 16th century.

Emotional Visit
Jul 2019
Having seen a television programme with Jamie Oliver, I felt that I had to go and see this place for myself. The scenery and route to Pitigiliano is as breathtaking in real life as it was in Jamie's television episode. One is able to park one's car within the old city walls, but you cannot go any further with a car in this medieval town. The town Pitigiliano is also known as Little Jerusalem as indeed like Jerusalem it is a walled city on top of a hill. The way to the Synagogue is signposted and one makes one's way through tiny winding streets to the Synagogue entrance. The Synagogue has been beautifully restored and you can take your time to see the Synagogue itself including the Womens Gallery, The Mikveh, The Matzo Oven and the Wine Cellar. One can buy very cheaply, a video about the story of the last Jewish Grandmother who lives there. How she survived the Second World War, hiding in nearby caves and fed by Pitigiliano residents. The museum there is very detailed and has amazing photographs.

walk back into history
Jul 2019 • Couples
While in Pitigliano, visit the Jewish ghetto and the synagogue. You'll get a bit of an understanding of what the Jews lived like - how they baked their matzo, butchered their meat and followed their culture and their traditions during trying times. An interesting hour or two, from which I came away much more enlightened.

Synagogue Visit
May 2019
Definitely do not miss this synagogue museum so you can have the opportunity to understand the rich Jewish history of this region. It is museum is so much more than the synagogue itself.

An interesting piece of Jewish History
Apr 2019 • Couples
Easy to find on TripAdvisor maps. Costs 5 euro but being Jewish I though worth it. I’m sure the money helps to keep the place open. Small but interesting. Lots of information to read in Italian & some in English but would be helpful to read about more detailed information if you only speak English. It’s located in an Amazing beautiful town, I could have spent at least 1 1/2 hours there looking around & reading information, and a full day in Pitigliano. Was surprised how many people toured it but was not a wait on a Monday afternoon. Bought one of the sfratto for 4 euro & was pleasantly surprised how good it is. Like a sweat hard crust filled with a vanilla nutty paste.(the lady working didn’t speak English & I don’t read Italian to know the exact ingredients). She did point & say to read the wrapper it’s important. Work going to & amazed at the caves.
