The decoration on the outside of the basilica is fantastic. Interior is relatively plain compared with the cathedral, but still worth a look

We all know what Florence Duomo looks like, St Peter's in Vatican City, St. Mark's in Venice... well... this is easily in that category. The sculptured figures in front, alone are worth a trip. The cherubs in front, the Old Testament prophets, the incredible paintings in the basilica from the 1730's by Pietra Paolo Vasta, all of it is just amazing. Yet, who has heard of it?! The current church has been standing since 1700, go enjoy this great town and this wonderful church.

One of the many churches in Acireale (about half way between Taormina and Catania) . Amazing Baroque architecture outside , less impressive inside . Main entrance on Via Vittorio Emanuele and not on the Piazza Leonardo Vigo . Only a few minutes walk from Piazza Duomo with its two churches (See separate reviews) . So if you are already in Acireale - do take the time to enjoy this church also .

Acireale apparently has 100 churches! This one is worth stepping into. You can further enjoy it it from across the square whilst having a gelato at the bar exactly across, the other side of the square.

Acireale is definitely worth a walk while you are in and around Catania. Take the costal road that goes from Catania through Aci Castello, Aci Trezza (remember to say hi to the Cyclopes) and finally park close to the duomo in Acireale. For such a small city this is definitely a church worth exploring. You can't leave Acireale without eating the granita! Enjoy (remember Sicily is all about FOOD!)

A real jewel of baroque architecture - beautiful facade and interiors. The church is right in the city center and worth a visit especially for those in love with architecture and history.

I am not a particular fan of Acireale and would instead spend the day in AciCastello and Acitrezza, but if you are here, the facade is pretty spectacular. The line of cherubs in particular is unique, and there is a bar across the way, if you want to sit and let your eyes wander.

The facade is really where this church stands out. There are many angels and columns and niches. Fascinating. Inside there are some interesting frescoes, but not to the same quality as the outside art.

Acireale is the most famous city for its beautiful churches, in fact it is true. I was here one evening after dinner, of course the church was already closed so I could admire it only from the outside, it was enough to understand that this beautiful baroque style church was something exceptional.

Beautiful Basilica, if you are in or around the Acireale area it is really worth a visit. Easy to park nearby.

Auguri
