The Centre shares the story of the greatest climber ever; Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person conquered the Everest. Movies, pictures and museum objects are amazing.

The centre is on two floors and tells the story of the mountaineers and how they climb the peaks. There is also good information regarding the fauna and wild life. Very well laid out. Lots of local info.

What a wonderful asset to the centre. Great to see the tractors used to get to the North Pole. Really enjoyed the 3D film about Mt Cook amazing photography. A really good place to tale children.

So many interesting displays about Sir Edumund Hillary and also the planetarium style cinema is also worth a visit. We wonder about how Hillary was able to explore and do so much at a time when the infrastructure wasn't even there to enable them to actually get into the area. Great walking tracks, ON a GOOD day!

The outdoors here is definitely the highlight. The movies Alpine Centre was marginally interesting, and the movie selection (or lack there of) was decidedly disappointing. We caught a couple of them. One was interesting, the other not. The one that looked the most interesting had been removed from the schedule.

We were keen to visit the museum but we like others were expecting to see more of the story and more artefacts from his climbs. The films were interesting but difficult to hear as there were a number of children running wild while their parents watched. They took over the areas and were yelling and screaming climbing on anything around... More

I'm afraid we chose to be idle after a 5-hour drive from Christchurch . We bought a drink from the enormous cafe and bar and sat on the sunny terrace to plan our walking trip for the next day. The backdrop of snow-capped mountains is spectacular.

This would be an ok 30 minutes visit if you made a contribution but $20 just seems a bit steep Also I was disappointed that it didn't have any genuine items on display from the British Everest team that Sir Edmund was apart of that was lead by John Hunt Or did I miss that!

We spent a couple of hours at the centre looking at the small museum detailing Sir Edmund Hillary's life and then watching two movies on the big screen. We watched Edmund Hillary's conquest of Everest which was excellent and then the shorter 3D Mount Cook movie. Views from the centre would be amazing on a fine day, unfortunately we could... More
