Accessible walk with an 8 year old in tow

We didn't walk the whole 5km circuit but enjoyed the area we did walk along. Especially with the commemorative ANZAC poppies along part of the fence.

This was once a pretty neat circuit around the outside of the mine, but over the years it has been diverted more and more away from the mine. Last year a very large chunk was made inaccessible and now you get to walk around a large diversion down hills and streets well away from the mine. If you are interested... More

While the hole in the ground is huge and fascinating there isnt much else to see and do. I believe they are closing the mine down so there was next to no activity. If your driving through stop for a look but dont go out of your way as after 5 min youll be bored

Free parking along the road outside the Gold Discovery Centre, we parked there and walked up the gravel path to the Waihi Martha Mine Pit Rim Walkway. Clearly the gravel path is not great for those with walking concerns or are on a wheelchair, but I am sure that there are other entrances where will enable those with walking concerns... More

My wife and I had a pleasant stroll along the walkway. It has been expertly done with planting of native species on a pretty flat path. The information boards are interesting but you don't see a whole lot of the mine which is understandable. There have been a few route diversions which take a fair way from the rim into... More

Free parking on the roads near the mine. Gravel paths up to the viewing points so not really suitable for wheelchairs. Once at the fence line you simply cast your eyes over the massive pit.

Totally inspiring, enormous and interesting to vie from the different areas to walk and view behind the large safety fences. I loved the rock formations of the benches that had been previously worked over the years mining using loaders and dump trucks to gig and cart the blue rock and brown rock (farmers) out to be crushed to go on our... Any trip through Waihi should allow ample time to explore the largest gold mine in New Zealand; the open cast pit, the remains of the pump station (which are often mistaken by tourists for a castle ruins).....and the rim walkway which runs close to the edge of the open-cast pit in places, but away from the rim and through regenerating... The Mine is only visible from first part of the walk the majority of the walk is away from the edge with the occasional view of the odd building and some moderately interesting facts scattered along the route.
