We went on the 21 day Ponant expedition from Dunedin NZ . It was brilliant . The wildlife, nature , and historic aspects of the trip were extremely wonderful . This was facilitated by the work of 19 naturalists were were experts in all relevant fields ( history, birds, sea-life, geology, ice, and of course penguins , penguins and more Penguins ). We just loved the whole thing.

The food on board was disappointing, especially the bread, but everything else was great .

As part of a life changing expedition to Antarctica, this is a great spot for wild life and whale watching from a zodiac off shore. Weather changes rapidly here, so it’s important you’re with professionals. We went from sunny and -3C to being caught in a freak blizzard hauling butt back to the ship on a zodiac within a matter of 20 minutes...but every minute was still perfect.

I spent 8 months on the ice during the 2014-15 season at McMurdo Station on the southern end of Ross Island. During that time I explored a good portion of the Island that i could on hikes and trips, seeing Hut Point where Scott's Discovery Hut is located, claimed Observation Hill to see a breathtaking view of the island and the mainland, seeing the southernmost active volcano Mount Erebus, Cape Evans to the northeast and hiking to Arrival Heights.
