I visited Deception Island during an Expedition Cruise to Antarctica. The volcano is Quote massive and the caldera forms On my way of the safest harbours near the Antarctic Peninsula. I did a hike to the hill near the former whaling station and took a bath in the cold water.

Deception Island has everything. Amazing rock formations, geothermal activity, remnants of building and storage tanks, and plenty of avian wildlife. It is pretty hard to get their on your own, so hopefully your expedition cruise stops there.

Whalers Bay and Neptunes Bellows we saw going in were awesome. What was even crazier was how enormous this caldera is. It took us hours to get all the inside

To paraphrase the old saying, all good things must come to an end. However, the last landing my wife and I made on our Antarctica expedition was full of adventure. This horseshoe shaped “island” is on the site of an active volcano. The island was formed as the result of volcanic eruptions that emptied magma and eventually formed Deception Island. During my exploration, I learned that the island was once the home of a whaling station and subsequently also the home of scientific stations. Unfortunately, volcanic eruptions seriously damaged scientific stations in 1967 and 1969. Skeletal remnants of a scientific station remain. There are also large storage bins and barrels that remain from the old whaling station.

This exploration was unique to our Antarctica journey based on the nature of the island. Heat still emanates from the black sand and the mist spreads along the water edge. This makes Deception Island a great place to take a dip when visiting Antarctica!

Deception Island is also home to the still waters of Telefon Bay as well as Mount Achala which offered a nice hiking trail with magnificent views. A lone chinstrap penguin stopped to check us out as we were taking the last few steps to our final zodiac ride! Every visitor to Antarctica must include an exploration of Deception Island as part of their Antarctica journey.

It was our fourth and final day in Antarctica and we had made it to Deception Island in time for sunset. This island is still an active volcano, with its center a caldera that has filled with sea water. The ruins from a whaling station, abandoned years ago still remain, although we did not see it. The sunset here was amazing but it was very cold and windy. Of the 1,200+ people on our cruise ship, only 21 of us were adventurous (stupid) enough to watch the sunset from the open deck. According to our captain, the wind was gusting to 65 knots (75 mph).

Antarctica is amazing! We started the first day of 2020 with sailing into the caldera of Deception Island. We landed in Telefon Bay, and had the possibility of taking a long circular hike to a mountain top with a great view of the caldera. We were satisfied just to go about 1/2 way up. Even though I am not adventuresome, I really want to take a dip in the Antarctica waters instead. It was very cold to say the least, and hit you about 30 seconds into the water, but it definitely was a once in a lifetime experience! It was recommended to do this in Telefon Bay as there is relief from the winds that can prevail. There is a place to go "swimming" called Pendulum Cave across the harbor that is geothermally heated but that was not the area where we landed. .We also did a zodiac tour for a geology lesson. It is still considered an active volcano. Last eruption was in 1970.

The day we visited it was overcast and somewhat darkish. It gave the entire island an eerie feeling. I think that added to the charm of the visit. Would love to do it again!

Very good location our ship sailed into the volcano through the narrow channel - the control was superb.
We then were able to land on the dark black beach.
It felt strange feeling warm rocks on the beach in the Antarctic.
The steam coming off the sea as it hits the beach is very strange.
