Overview
More
To assist with ship navigation, a temporary lighthouse was positioned on Lady Elliot Island in 1866. It toppled in a severe storm in 1872 and in 1873 a new light station was established. Standing at approximately 17 metres, the white and red lighthouse you see today was pre-made in England and shipped to the Island in pieces. It was the first lighthouse in Australia with a timber frame and weatherproof cast iron external cladding. The lighthouse was decomissioned in 1995 when it became too short for the surrounding vegetation and a new solar powered, fully automated tower was built. Lady Elliot Island lightstation was placed on the Commonwealth Heritage List in 2004. It is also significant because it represents an important landmark indicating the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The Lady Elliot Island Lightstation Heritage Management Plan was developed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) in March 2012 to protect, conserve and manage the Commonwealth Heritage values of the Lady Elliot Island lightstation. At this stage, the lighthouse is not open to the public but is often the focus of history and photography buffs.

I'd been to Heron island several times and Lady Elliot turned out to be a cheaper and similar experience. Basic accommodation good food and brilliant snorkelling. Loved walking around the island amongst the birds as well.

The lighthouse on Lady Elliot Island is a very ornate and gorgeous lighthouse that overlooks the deep side of the island where you can snorkel off in 20-30 metre deep water. Although it is not currently in use, it provides a good landmark that looks...More

This small island has it all. A short flight from Hervey Bay and you are miles away from everything. The small hut accommodation on the beach is rustic and romantic and the the reef is easily accessible from the shore. All meals are included in...More

The lighthouse has a lot of history attached. Its also where you can pick up mobile phone connection. (and a snorkelling entry point, especially for manta rays)

Located on the western side of Lady Elliott Island, the old lighthouse is no longer in operation but still stands proudly next to the new (and it has to be said ugly) operational light tower. Just a few minutes walk from the main buildings on...More

An excellent place to enjoy a drink at sunset. Also an excellent staring point for snorkeling and diving.

The old lighthouse is impressive -circa 1873. . . . . but after a 5 minute wander around it that is all that is needed with a few photos. it is still a working lighthouse BTW!. . . . and on an ECO resort with...More

This lighthouse is located right new to a beautiful coral beach, it's a nice spot to watch the sun go down. And right next to it is the ocean where you can go snorkelling!

The historic lighthouse on Lady Elliott Island is one of the 3 snorkelling areas on the island. It's also the best spot to watch the sun go down. The lighthouse itself has been replaced by a girder tower but it lends a historical note to...More
