Behind the impressive castle on its granite rock, seigneurial home of the Comtes de Tournon, is a maze of narrow streets meandering through the historic center. Since the Early Middle Ages to the 18th century the Tournons have left a great cultural heritage thanks to different monuments such as the Chateau de Tournon (see on page 7 “Our favourite attractions”) but also the Collegiate Church Saint Julien built in the 14th century with its magnificent frescoes in the Chapelle des Penitents.

The town is then strongly fortified during the Hundred Years’ War, but it will expand beyond the wall after it quickly became prosperous again. In the south, the Porte de Mauves can be admired, the last stable door which once closed the town (there used to be 4) and where the coat of arms of the town is still to be seen. 2 watchtowers are left in the north and the south of the Sentier des Tours, a marked walking path which used to go along the wall in the 16th century. It is also a nice one-hour walk.

Easy walk around compact town center

Churches, castle narrow winding streets, little shops. All within a tight walking area close to the river.

We spent well over 90 minutes simply discovering the city center. We loved the quaint, narrow provincial streets and the numerous photo opportunities. You can spend some extra time at the Church of Saint-Julien or the Chateau Museum. I would also suggest that you walk out on the Passerelle Marc Sequin, suspension bridge and look back over the city.

This is a very surprising and beautiful stop on the Rhone river. It is not a large ville, but has some interesting history and architecture. It is perfect for strolling along the river, enjoying some cafe shops and restaurants, and viewing the Rhone river. There is an interesting suspension bridge across the river here. The inventors of the suspension bridge... More

A lovely historic town well worth a walk around. Best get away from the busy main road that separates the village and the town. A morning stroll with a coffee great.....

Tournon is a lovely town to walk around and absorb the medieval period. The castle of Tournon is commanding and sits perched high on a rocky mount. Wonderful photo op.

A great way to keep fit and experience an old Cote du Rhone village, largely untouched in a 100 years.

Our tour stopped in Tournon primarily to visit the local steam train but this felt like a nice town to visit on a sunny day. Parks were clean and maintained. There was a lot of statuary and public art. The rainy day did clear the streets of most locals so there were plenty of photo ops. I could see going... More

We had a guided tour of the town center, but it could be fun to get lost then found again in the little back streets.

Tournon is a charming little town. Like a lot of the towns along the Rhone river, it has many historic sites. While we only had a short time here, our guide showed us the main historical sites (castle, bridge and school). I would like to come back one day and explore a little more.

Walking around this area weather permitting is lovely, we did a walk around the medieval city of Tournon and visited the Garden of Eden a hillside garden that was once a retreat for Jesuit monks, it was a clear beautiful day so we took the footbridge across the Rhone to the holiest of hills The Hermitage whose history dates back...
