Unique and utterly unspoilt by tourism.......So go now!!
Oct 2015
A beautiful limestone plateau national park in the heart of Andalucia bounded by Cordoba, Granada and Seville. The tourist trade is only just being developed now so the area remains largely sleepy and undiscovered. In October 2015 we stayed in Zuheros, walked out every day for a week into the many hidden valleys of the area and rarely came across another walker or cyclist, even on the Via Verde, the old olive railway now converted to a walking and cycling path that snakes its way through valleys, over gorges and through tunnels with the view changing very minute. Signs exist up in the hills but very infrequently and for those of us spoilt with Ordnance Survey maps the maps in the area are large scale, poor in detail and often incomplete. So you need to use the guided notes provided by groups like Headwater or provided by the hotels. These need to be followed meticulously as paths are inclined to disappear, even those that are supposed to be National Paths. Despite the lack of reliable topographical maps do take a compass with you as it is easy to be become disorientated on the twisting and turning landscape. But it really is superb, unspoilt and great for bird watching (Golden Eagles, Vultures, Bea Catchers and the like), cycling on mountain bikes (Just watch out for the edge!) or of course walking or even running.
