Has an indoor market inside. So majority of gifts in one place a bit cheaper. We had lunch just outside, cheap n cheerful. Waiters very friendly.
Nice flower displays for picture taking at the wall.
Can walk up to old town from off the square., Very narrow and windy though. But pretty. Lots of small shops.
We loved Kos and the different areas. Very pretty town.

A lovely square in Kos town, lined with traditional bars and restaurants. There are further beautiful tree covered restaurants just off the square towards Hippocrates tree with proper tablecloths and traditional features.
We stopped for a drink at Kous-Kous as, so it seems, most tourists did. The place was very busy but the service was excellent. Lovely tonic water which was refreshing in the heat. Just off the square there are winding roads taking you into the old town of Kos. Unfortunately, it was a Tuesday when we visited and the museums off the square as well as the main castle in the town were closed. Avoid going on Tuesdays. Lovely independent little shops and extremely clean all around. Accessible as well across the town.

Eleftherias (Freedom) square is the centre of Kos Town. It is the atmospheric open air "Drawing Room" of Kos where everybody goes for their evening stroll, to see and to be seen. It is overlooked on one side by the Nefterdar mosque which was built at the end of the 18th century and the ablution fountain, on the other by the Italian Colonial style Merkato, and by the Theatre and library and the Archaeological Museum on the other sides. Towered over at night by the illuminated crosses of the Orthodox Cathedral and adjoined by the ancient Roman Agora it provides a superb urban set piece symbolising the rich mix of influences which have made this unique island. Avoid the dubious attractions of “Bar Street” or bars like “Shenanigans” who get business from “looking after” tourist reps. Avoid also the strip of restaurants by the harbour with multi-lingual tourist menus, Nothing too wrong with them but they are a form of culinary wallpaper which you can hardly describe as “Real Greek”. Instead follow me to a small and select bunch of authentic good value venues.
The cafes on Eleftherias Square are all good with slight differings in their offerings but not much difference in price and all have good service. One custom I like here is a printed receipt will be left on the table in a small glass when you are served and nobody will chase you for money. They are happy for you to leave it in the glass on trust when you go.
A good pit stop for food and drink is Ideal Snack Bar on Martiou Street just off Eleftherias Square. Ideal is delightful and always friendly. The Gyros (Chicken or Pork Souvlaki) are the best value and tastiest on the island. It is run by Zoë and her family; She is Greek American from Boston and totally cool. She is also an unfailing source of reliable advice on what to do and what to see but nobody can give you reliable advice in Greece on ferry timetables!
Nobody stacks a Gyros like Timo, the chef at Ideal; these are not bought in but made fresh every day by Timo and Zoë’s dad, Kostaes. A Gyros at 1.90 Euros provides a satisfying lunch with a Greek salad and a fresh orange juice. The food here is straightforward and tasty and when you go the second time you are welcomed like family. More importantly it is scrupulously clean. The family also run the highly recommended Mayflower Apartments in Tigaki. Like with the cafes on the square it is a good place to relax and engage in some serious people watching. also if you are om your way home it is open until one in the morning and like all the cafes here you can go for a coffee, drink, ice cream, snack or full meal. It is the Real Greek!

the square is lovely, and plenty of shops to look at, including the spice market. We did notice though that it was MUCH quieter than the last two visits (2011 and 2009) and I wonder if the "migrant crisis" has put people off. Yes there are a one or two migrants that have come across from Turkey (only 8km away) here and there, usually tucked away in a corner, but they are absolutely no bother at all, not once did any of them bother us, ask us for money, or anything like that - they are HAPPY to get into Europe and away from the ISIS threat in their own countries (mainly Libya,Iraq and Syria). We even smiled and waved at a couple of children with their mum and dad, and received a cheery wave back, even from the parents. So please dont let the British tabloid media put you off going to Kos. I really dont know what their aim is in printing this RUBBISH !!!.....And you'll help the Greek economy too - God knows they need it .

After a day walking around the many, many ancient ruins and historical sites Kos Town has on offer (which are free to enter and fascinating) we sat for a coffee at the café with the variously coloured chairs. This is run by the local women’s association and employs women (only) who would otherwise find it hard to get a job; childcare commitments etc. Great coffee: two filter cafetierres (spelling?) with homemade biscuits and large water glasses, only €2.50 each.
You can also sit and sun for as long as you want, then go and visit the indoor market, in the square, and the museum (when open). Children are safe to run free and chase the pigeons as no cars or bikes go through. A lovely place to chill out and right next to some of those ancient monuments.

Lots of hustle and bustle in the market, which I might add had the best prices believe it or not. The produce is totally amazing. We bought local honey and olive oil, olive wood, herbs, spices and other little nik naks. Unlike the one terrible review on here saying they are rip off merchants I have one thing to say to that - if you're going to purchase fake perfume then more fool you. And if you genuinely believe you are buying real perfume, then you must be daft. If you want to buy stuff like that, buy it in the airport. However, if you want to buy beautiful, local products then you are in good hands. Educate yourself.

this place is full of bars, cafes and restaurants... after city sightseeing, you can seat in comfortable chair with pillows and relax, watching the people and drinking something cold ...

Lovely place with plenty of cafes and restaurants to eat. Less expensive off the square. Sad to see the damage to buildings following the earthquake last year with no current plans for repair - scary reminder of the power of Mother Nature

It's just an area of various bars and café's, which face each other and form a square. Oh and a mosque, that has the underneath converted into a restaurant, which could be absolutely anywhere.
You could draw a triangle around another group of bars and call it the Eleftherias Triangle... I get that it's good for people watching, but so are most bars in Kos? If anything it seems to be the place to go for kids to run around screaming?
Don't get it!

Hi. Been on a day trip to Kos today & seen an item we liked in a type of hardware store which was closed, as were quite a few other shops in the surrounding area. We coudnt see opening hours & wondered if anyone could advise are the shops closed certain days? The area wasn't far from the main square & looked as though other shops were non tourist type shops, designer shoe/clothes shops etc which were also closed. Thank you.

Every Monday and Wednesday afternoon the shops are closed. As well as on Sundays the whole day. The tourist shops during summer season are open the whole day everyday but the rest not.

Do they have a market here. If so, what day and what kind of things do they sell?
thankyou

I agree with the precious two.
If you are checking you luggage might be worth buying a couple of jars of the delicious honey. Or just a small jar if you are travelling with only cabin bags.

How do I get there using public transportation?
Written 8 January 2017
It's only about 100 metres at right angles from the old port.Ask for the Agora/old market place and enjoy a slow coffee/drink there while you watch the world go by !

wot is the immigrant situation like now ?, all reports state that the town is full of them on every pathway, corner and beach.

We stayed in October, a few immigrants in Kos Town, but only temporary as being put on ferries. We saw no trouble, it was just upsetting to see baby's and women with all worldly possession's in one bag, so sad. I think by now the situation will have eased, it would not put me off visiting Kos, it is such a lovely island and the locals cannot do enough for you, they are fab.
