About
A Spectacular Botanical Garden and Wildlife Park Open to the public since the 1st April 2001, the Botanical Gardens at Deshaies are a recent creation. This park, whose youth is imperceptible, has very quickly imposed itself as the place to be for nature enthusiasts and lovers of tropical plants. Situated on the windward coast of Basse-Terre, 100m in altitude up above the town of Deshaies, the garden stretches out over 5 hectares of sloping mountainside. Its favourable location guarantees beautiful views over the coast and an unrivalled vantage-point overlooking the bay of Deshaies. The site was already home to a nursery created by Guy Blandin, a plant-lover who brought rare and unknown plant species from his travels around the world back to Guadeloupe. Many of them unfortunately disappeared when Cyclone Hugo hit and severely damaged the island in 1989. The humorist Michel Colluci, also known as Coluche, acquired the property in 1979. A few years later, in 1985, he invited his friend Michel Gaillard, an interior landscaper in mainland France, to set up his nursery there in exchange for taking care of the property's garden. A year later, the death of Coluche brought the future of the property back into question. Michel Gaillard bought back the property in 1991 to honour the memory of his friend, with the idea in mind of creating a botanical garden. This risky and ambitious project required several years of planning, of research into its feasibility and then of execution. The garden was finally brought about in accordance with Michel Gaillard's and the landscaper Samuel Craquelin's plans. Over the course of the path which snakes its way through the gardens, visitors today discover a world of real abundance: a world with 800 species of plant all brought together, with several animal species, which were introduced much to the delight of children, and with the most spectacular and unexpected landscapes following one after the other. Tourists are invited on an unforgettable walk amidst fifteen or so different scenes.

My wife and I are members of Friends of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. We visit a lot of botanical gardens on our travels. This is one of the best we have ever visited. The variety and lushness of the plants was outstanding. Getting to see two mother hens with their chick was a bonus.

beautiful gardens, easy well made paths through trees and rare plants. I saw humming birds flying freely and at the entrance a large pool with hundreds of goldfish. you could buy food for them which was great for kids, of all ages. Cafe well worth a visit and the ice cream was the best ever, the coconut was delicious. queue for toilets but they were clean and free.

The gardens were well set out and had lots of different plants with signs. The water features were lovely as were the Koi.
Perfect way to spend a few hours with plenty of shady trees.

This botanical garden is a picture book of vistas and progressively entrancing plantings.
You are welcomed by friendly fish and then the winding path takes you though the garden designer's vision of the Island's fertility.
We all loved this garden and were entranced by it's many facets.
It's not cheap at about €17 each. Don't let that put you off, it is money well spent.

Wonderful Botanical Gardens, takes approximately one hour, we had no holdups with traffic. Definitely buy the food for $3 you get three little pots, (1) fish, (2) parrots and (3) goats, you can encourage the parrots to sit and feed from your hand.

A very nice garden that makes all our plants in Sweden look very small. Spend a couple of hours and stroll in a slow pace and admire the plants and some birds.

Nice small gardens, well laid out and a lot packed into the space. Paths wind and twist and seldom see to the same thing twice. Would be nice to have plant signs in English as well. Nicely done.

A wonderful garden with very rare flowers and plants. It was well laid out and a easy walk with places to seat if required, but best to go in the morning or after 2 as it gets hot in full sun.

Surprise!!! Who would expect to find such a treasure on such a small, remote island. Beautifully laid out. Paved path. Very mature garden with large trees as well as lovely bushes and flowers. Must see when you’re here.

It’s worth a visit, but try not to go on days that cruiseship people attack the island. They also have a souvenirshop that has reasonably priced things.
After the visit it was not possible to have a relaxing drink. The restaurant would ‘t allow us at their free tables and the snackbar doesn’t have much places. And when we found a spot, we were kindly asked to leave because it was an reserved area for cruise people. They should fix this situation. It was a bummer after a nice visit.
