This nature reserve is vast. I guess 30 by 10 kilometers. You can walk from St. Pierre, Narbonne Plage, or Gruissan. The walks all inter lead, so start and use your sense to follow the coast line or go any circular route. At worst you can always head towards the sea and walk back. The vineyards, forests and cliffs bring out the beauty of nature. It is relaxing to walk any length that suits you.

We followed one of the walking routes (available to download from Gruissan tourisme website)snaking up past memorial stones for ancient mariners up to a little chapel, the completed a circular walk on the top of the clape winding through ancient garrigue your feet brushing the wild sage, rosemary and thyme. Wonderful views of the sea and étangs of Gruissan and the magnificent cathedral of Narbonne

This is a natural salt lake in a rocky chasm, in La Clape. The views of the Aude delta and the sea are breath-taking and l'Oeil Doux is very interesting. Worth about 20 minutes on foot to get there.
There are two car parks, either on the Fleury to St Pierre road or at Domaine de l'Oustalet in St Pierre.

La Clape is a little known wine region with its own AC. It is situated just south of Narbonne and rises up from the superb beaches at St Pierre, Gruissan and Narbonne plage. The La Clape Massif is a compact area of typical 'garrigue' country with some excellent vineyards most of which offer degustations and direct sales. If you like Rhone wines you will love the wines of La Clape!

This is a fascinating limestone outcrop near Narbonne, full of character and superb vineyards that produce a very distinctive wine with its own Appellation.

The 'Le Clape' area extends a long way, so this review relates to the area of the Clape which is located near to Gruissan. The Office of Tourism in Gruissan(near to Lidl) will give you directions the name does not convey the picture of the wonderful place that it is or the opportunities offered by this special and treasured place.
A national Park, it offers superb walking of varying levels of difficulty across managed but unspoiled terrain, rock climbing, nature walks, pick-nick areas and views which are breathtakingly outstanding. Whether you take the view over the perfectly blue Mediterranean sea or the rustic unspoiled mountains valleys and heavily wooded areas, it's more than a day out, you could spend weeks exploring this fascinating place.
A place to visit is the Mariners cemetery which is presided over by the Notre Dame Le Auzils which is situated at the top of a steep trail through the cemetery, the views are stunning and the Chapel(Notre Dame) houses some interesting historical paintings, sadly many of the originals have been stolen so the pictures are now represented by paintings copied onto the walls.
For those who are squeamish about cemeteries, this one has no human remains as those commemorated in the various headstones died at sea and in foreign places.
The cemetery also commemorates a sea tragedy which occurred off Gruissan in the late 18th early 19th Century, when fishermen returning home after a long voyage drowned in bad weather in front of their wives and families waiting for them on the beach.
Notice on the way up to the Notre Dame the hermits garden, the hermit used to conduct tours around the area.
There is a large car park situated adjacent to the start of the trail through the cemetery but beware there are signs warning not to leave valuables in cars.
Also in Le Clape are a number of noted vineyards, Hospitalet being one of them, we have visited here several times, the vintage, and modern wines are of exceptional quality and worth a degustation(taste) which is free, the staff are both French and English speaking, some are language students, there to learn about wine production and practice their French language, they are very knowledgeable and willing to help.
Do remember that the lighting of fires is not permitted as Le Clape, in the summer particularly the area is a tinderbox..
It is wonderful to sit, drink a glass of wine and enjoy a pick nick at one of the many areas set aside for this purpose.

Living locally I love the Clappe but when visiting you should beware of arrogant cyclists who range over it seemingly thinking they have some divine right to behave like idiots.

In the blazing heat of the Summer in Gruissan this is the place to visit to keep cool. It is a vast area littered with vineyards for those of you who, like to taste the local wines.
There is so much to do there, caving, picnics, boules, chilling etc.
If you have the energy and want to see an amazing panoramic view then climb up to the Auzils Church. The climb is marked by gravestones to the ships that have been lost to the sea.
