A cathedral in such a small village? Yes, because it is the birthplace of a pope. It isn't the most richly-decorated cathedral but is is historically significant. SOme interesting detail. Limited opening hours but well worth the effort.

2 Euro admission per persn. Very interesting duomo at the far end of Sovana opposite the castle. Nice book shop on site. If you buy a book you get a 2E pp discount (i.e. your admission back).

This Duomo was so unassuming and stately from the exterior. The buttressed ancient walls decorated with animal motifs, provide immediate interest. The interior is HUGE and fitted out with many fine monumental religious pairings from centuries past. There is also a reliquary on the lower level very much worth a look. You enter the site through an EXCELLENT bookstore. If... More

Interesting to visit this ancient site, learn the history and see the ruins. Very few people around, so it quiet and contemplative there. Made for great photography.

ancient Etruscan artifacts, history and the very different tabernacle in the church...this was one of the most unique villages in Maremma, I thought.

We enjoyed this duomo at the farthest end of this hill town. The simplicity and within that beauty. The remains in the crypt is a bit sordid, but again simple.

Don't pass up this little town of Sovana with this marvelous, historic church almost 1,000 years old. You won't find walls of gold here. It is the simplicity of this church that attracts within a town that is not overrun with tourists. This place left such an impact on me and my three travel companions.

Don't miss this Duomo, an ancient church built on the remains of an Etruscan site. There is a spiritual essence in this building..the stone walls seemed to have absorbed eons of prayers. Two special times each year--Summer and Winter Solstice, a minor miracle occurs. The church is built (and how did they do this?) so that the sun comes in... More

This is an ancient Romanesque Cathedral with a beauty of design that almost mystically captures the sense of ancient faith (complemented well during our visit by recordings of ancient chant).
