One of the important sites in the Judean Hills of Israel. One of many synagogues from the 5th century located in the southern Hebron Hills of Israel.

Susya is a great place to visit. The caves are interesting and we love the ancient synagogue. Then be sure to visit the modern village they have affordable places to stay and tours of the area. Ask for Aryel Tzion one of the local tour guides. Lot of history about King David .

Politics aside, region can be a bit confusing even for locals, let alone for foreign tourists. I wish that tripadvisor would allow to list locations that are under full Israeli control as such so to help tourists get a better understanding of what to expect.

Susya is site of an ancient Israelite city, dating back to the time of the second temple in Jerusalem. It is a large archaeological site with many artifacts of buildings and cave dwellings and great ancient synagogue with amazing stone pillars and mosaic floors.

As mentioned above it is in Israeli administered areas, the site entrance has a modern visitors center, coffee shop, gift shop and clean restrooms.

Add to your must visit list.

I visited the historical Susya. There you can get an incredible insight into a world which seems so different for us.
I was disturbed, that our guide did neglect that the caves have been inhabited, by Palestinians, until 40 years ago. Close to the sight I met people who have been born there. They live under conditions which we can’t imagen and they have a huge knowledge about the live in this barren landscape, close to the desert. The guide told us how scientist unearth this knowledge which still exist, instead of talking to people which have preserved it.
The brochure shows how the operators of the sight think. They just show where Israeli people live. Even settlements with less than 100 inhabitants are marked, but the city Yatta where more than 100 000 Palestinian people live is hidden by a Deer.

It is NOT in the "Palestinian Territories."
It is in Sussiya, Har Chevron, Israel. If you want to get technical it is in Area C which legally speaking is "Contested." The "Palestinian Territories" consist only of Area A, Area B, and Sector H1 in Hebron.

The site is of a Jewish synagogue and portions of adjacent homes. Depending upon the academic source it was a thriving Jewish community until between the 8th & 15th Centuries CE. Either way it is just more evidence that the general Arab narrative is false.

The Judeo-Aramaic and Hebrew inscriptions in the mosaic are beyond precious. The imagery in the mosaic is incredible from the astrological depictions to
the swastika are quite instructive. The former shows that in the period of origin- in the case of the mosaic there is no real disute, it is 5th Century CE, the mid-Talmudic Era in Judaism- some Jews at least did not shy away from depicting the physical form. Traditional Judaism today is universal in rejecting that as being tantamount to idolatry.

We found and excellent guide, Immanuel with "One Israel Tours". He took us to Hebron and Susya. Susya is a hidden Gem and well worth going to. It was my son's favorite place on our Israel trip. I love the caves (Especially the escape cave). Take a flashlight! The Ancient Synagogue has some Messianic inscriptions on the tiles of the floor. Some of the best preserved ruins in Israel!

We wanted to visit the place but something went wrong with the israeli soldiers.
Maybe they didn't like my kefia, I just wonder because with no reason they just told me I can't enter.
This is a shame, the idf have the right to rule even in a historical place and let enter or not people randomly.
I'm Italian and it never happens something like this to me in Europe and neither in Palestine

The main attraction to the Susya Archaeological Site is the beautifully preserved synagogue with its imposing strategic location on a hill top, mosaic floors and stately columns. It reminded me of the Parthenon. Starting at the 2-year-old beautiful Visitors Center, there is a warm welcome, excellent coffee and snacks and outstanding wine, honey, cosmetics and other products all made locally and beautifully displayed. There is a walking tour guide, video, signs, and other information available in English and the site is easily walkable. The caves that depict ancient workrooms--pottery, weaving, etc. are welcome on a hot day. Recommended for families.
