It's is the ONLY way to travel!

Very pleasant narrow gauge railway linking the St. Gallen Bahnhof (Main train station) and Appenzell. Short walk to most shops, hotels and restaurants in the area.

This is what call the rural "Hop-on Hop-off" bus/train. We used it to see the local countryside, to visit St Gallen, or to access the numerous mountain trams and villages. It is a lovely way to travel and you don't have to watch the road.

Great little train for getting out and about into the countryside. Runs every 30 minutes, stops many times all along the way, but good connecting transportation and scenic views of Appenzeller land. We took it to Wasseraun to connect with cable car to Ebenalp. Also connects to Santis and Kronberg, or just to various walking paths. Free with 3 night... More

Has big windows that open. Also great for views. Frequent trains. If you have appenzell card, it is free.

This is a great way to travel the region. You can easily get onto these little trains; good network coverage.

The train is tiny, but runs reliably to almost anywhere you might want to visit in the Appenzell region. Lots of fun and reasonably priced! If you stay 3 nights or more at a local hotel, they will give you a free pass to use the train (or bus) for a week! Don't drive--take the train!

Even in a town as small as Appenzell the train is central and functions well with trains arriving and departing every 30 minutes. We took the train to the Kronberg cable car then hiked all the way back to Appenzell through stunningly beautiful countryside. Our Swiss Rail pass also gave us transportation on buses when needed. The on-time and frequent... More

This is just one branch of the very extensive Swiss rail networks. Don't get fooled thinking this is something special. It is a great way to get from place to place, and sure, it does have some great views from the window...but it is still just a train. A Swiss train, sure: clean, on time, comfortable. I would recommend anyone... More

Enjoyed taking the gondola to the restaurant at the top of Kronberg. Late November so it was foggy, but the restaurant was open and served a lovely dish. One of my best on this trip. Can't wait to go back.
