Svalbard, a small island in the north of mainland Norway, A freedom place that hundreds countries people can go there without visas. Last winter, I went there from Oslo, When I arrive there, it's purely night without any sun shine. In there, I lose the theory of time, one time, I look my watch before fall asleep, it's 8:00. In... We went this past summer in Svalbard, on our sailboat, up to 80th degree of latitude north, and we passed by Ny Alesund. We stayed there one night, nice pier, small town, but especially there was a very nice cook in the cafétéria of the research center. We went to see him to order some food and he went through... Literally out in the middle of nowhere, Ny Alesund, Norway is in the Arctic Circle. Most tourists reach it by cruise ship such as on the beloved Prinsendam of Holland America Cruise Line. The Post Office there is the northernmost post office in the world. Lots of people send postcards since it is the northernmost post office; the international stamp... More

We visited this northern community by cruise ship. What a privilege to be able to visit this location. It is truly unique and a once in a lifetime opportunity. I could not live here year round but give credit to those scientist who do.

Visited for a couple of hours from a cruise ship. Well maintained town which is now part museum part research station. You can send postcards from here after buying them at the gift shop of course!

This is a research centre for various nations. Not much here, souvenir shop, post office to get passport stamped. But the scenery, views are beautiful of the snow capped mountains and glacier. If travelled by boat or take a boat trip to see the icebergs floating past from the glacier. Amundsen ( Norwegian hero ) did do his flight from... More

Historic and fascinating. This is where Amundsen began his polar expedition, and remains a research centre where the delicate balance of the arctic environment is monitored and protected. Arctic terns nest in the streets, and the occasional polar bear passes through (which is why no-one locks their doors. You just might have to take cover!).

It's a research site, so don't expect much. There's a small store where you can buy souvenirs, a post office where you can get your passport unofficially stamped, a very small museum, and a dog kennel where the huskies are housed. Surrounded by snow capped mountains and glaciers, beautiful but isolated. At least we can say we have been to... More
