About
The Chateau of Cadillac, built from 1599, illustrates all the Jean-Louis Nogaret of Valette's power, a "cadet de Gascogne" who experienced a dazzling rise to become first Duke of Epernon, and be called "King in all but name". It presents the largest collection of 16th & 17th tapesttries withing French national heritage buildings. And served as a womens' prison from 1818 to 1952. Restored and revalued recently, it takes up today, in its inside and its decorations, with beautiful 17th century.

Only saw it from the outside, but had to be interesting inside
Nov 2019
Sadly, we were in the city o a Sunday--nothing happening! Just walking by the Chateau was the highlight of the entire tour. The design of the building is very good--it is huge and has a commanding presence in the city. The history and the many uses of the building is interesting.

We were expecting more of the city--it is small and unexciting. The walls as impressive and well built.

Good Morning or Afternoon Activity

Very interesting to see and it has been restored well.

You get to see the castle both how it was when it was owned by royalty and when it was a woman’s prison.

Worth visiting if you’re in the area.

Interesting history !
May 2019 • Couples
The chateau has a very interesting history as with a number of different uses, including as a women’s prison. Very little furniture or other artifacts, but fascinating to tour through, nevertheless.

Not much inside as with many French chateaux but it was a pleasant visit and not very expensive - i think €6 per adult.

Nice fireplaces but minimum amount of info

We took the train from the main train station in Bordeaux to Corens taking only 17 minutes and costing 6.8 Euro per person leaving Bordeaux at something like 13.10. Other trains do go to Corens, but can take considerably longer. From Corens, Cadillac is roughly an half an hour walk to the east. On a pleasant day, this is a nice walk. The roads to get there, have a footpath about 60% of the time. The other 40%, you need to be really careful and it’s better to walk into the direction of the traffic. If you are of limited mobility, are elderly, the weather is bad, or its getting dark, do not attempt this walk.

The Chateau itself is nice and big and opens at 2pm. On entering the gift shop to buy our tickets, things were looking up as we were handed an English paper guide. The gift shop also had a water station which was a nice after a long walk.

Entering the Chateau, the rooms were nice and big with good cooling. Unfortunately, our paper guide said very little about every room. A good amount of information was available in French. We were allowed to take photo’s without the flash. If my partner couldn’t read French, we could have done the whole thing in less than half an hour.

Getting back to Bordeaux was far more tricky due to the lack of trains and ended up being a half day visit in total.

Once again in France, this was an opportunity squandered. By simply providing all information in both French and English, this could have been much more than a half day waste of time. Providing all the information in English, (even a bad translation,) would require little effort and make a huge difference.

Unexpectedly nice and historic castle. From 17th C intrigue to the abuses of penal system this was amazing. Fireplaces were incredible.

Even the gift shop was special

Absolutely Stunning Palace
Sep 2017 • Couples
Parked the car, walked through the walled gate and up the hill to this Chateau. Free on the Saturday and an Art exhibition in place too. Central staircase with rooms left and right. The fireplaces are just beyond imagination and some unfinished. The size and materials are indescribable. An example of the wealth and tastes of the medieval aristocrats.

Fantastic Display of Fireplaces and Tapestries
Jun 2017 • Couples
The Chateau itself is an imposing building in the lovely town of Cadillac. The displays inside are what makes a visit so worthwhile. Each room has a magnificent fireplace and the walls are the showcase for a remarkable display of tapestries. Try to gain access to the garden to fully appreciate the grandeur of the Chateau itself.
