To be honest, to me visiting Ostia feels like a chill, crowd free version of visiting Pompeii. I've been to Ostia 3 times now and would not hesitate to visit again. Very easy to access by metro - just a 5-10 minute walk off of...More

Very easy to get to and when Rome gets too much with the crowds of tourists doing the same route, this is a welcomed antidote. It is peaceful, packed with history and the kids could wander off exploring with no issues at all. This is...More

A lovely and really interesting place, with loads less tourists than the main sites but with so much to see. Obviously you need to be interested in Roman history but you’d not be in Rome if you weren’t. Do take a snack and water with...More

The ancient Roman have awed me since I was a child. When we planned our trip to Rome, I looked at visiting Pompeii, but it looked like an exhausting day from, so I looked for an alternative -- Ostia Antica. While Pompeii has more ruins,...More

A few train stops from the heart of Rome. Ostia Antica is still an archeological site once a big harbor city that’s open to the public! Explore and get lost! Pack a lunch and picnic where a temple once stood or in some old Romans...More

We had time to see only half of the ruins, but were very impressed. I only wish their signs were better, both "street" signs and descriptions of different buildings.

To get here take the metro line B (blue line). You'll need to a get bus to Porta S. Paolo station. There is a bus that stops just outside. We got the no.23 bus from the Vatican. Really nice place to visit away from the...More

Wow! A whole Roman city of ruins that was once on the river. Amazing to see so much of it still in tact - fascinating place and well worth a visit. Took us 20 mins by train from Rome central. It is very large so...More

This should be a mandatory visit for all people coming to Rome. It is an easy and cheap 30-minute train ride from Rome. Ruins that tell a wonderful story of how Rome operated. Take your own guidebook, as the park's signs are in poor condition....More

Ostia was an ancient Roman port which was used throughout the era. In modern times, the site has been excavated and buildings include an amphitheatre and several basilicas. Go on a fine day, wear sensible shoes and allow a few hours. It will all be...More

We had a great lunch at Sora Margherita al Borghetto. It is inside the Castle walls right across the entrance to Ostia Antica. We tried two other places in Lido di Ostia but nothing came close to this. The pasta is... More
