A church you may not think of near the Pantheon, but that has a grandiose fresco. Here it is much calmer than in the Sistine Chapel, so you can take your time to enjoy the beautiful interior.

Great to see South East Sicilian baroque is such a pure form with little embellishment. Together with the adjacent monastery it forms a wonderful backdrop to Piazza Italia.

It is a nice piece of architecture. Built with love to details. The inside is also nice to see. I found it very relaxing. Colorful.

Unfortunately, the church was closed when we visited and we were not able to see the interior, but we did admire the beautiful 18th century facade of Chiesa Sant'Ignazio (the Mother Church), richly adorned with statues and sculptures - it is a true gem of spectacular Piazza Italia.

Chiesa Madre (Chiesa di Sant' Ignazio) is located at the top end of the Piazza Italia. It became the ‘Mother’ church in in 1874 replacing Chiesa di Sant Matteo. It features a huge baroque front façade with an inset clock. It was previously attached to an adjacent convent which was demolished in 1961 to build a new school. When it became the Mother church, a new door had to be created as the earlier entrances for the Nuns were set high off the ground as the Nuns once they had entered never left the convent!! Inside is a most unusual icon, la Madonna dei Milici, a statue made of papier-mache featuring the Madonna mounted on a white horse wearing a breast plate and holding a sword aloft trampling on two black Moorish Saracens.
