The largest such in Norway, we stopped and visited on the way back to Flam from Osterbo Mountain Farm, an excursion from our Viking Ocean Cruise. Dating back to the 13th century, this is a must see and not often found on a tourist itinerary.

The main parish church in the Aurland district is small, but impressive early Gothic building made from a white stone. It was built at the beginning of the 13th century and completely restored in the 19th century. Great sight in the wonderful surrounding!

Like most of the churches we saw in Norway this one is quite simple and in its simplicity it belies its age.

I visited the region of Aurland mainly to see the Borgund Stave Church which is quite close by - but I discovered another little church that didn't seem to feature much in the guidebooks. The Vangen Church is in the village of Aurland which is serviced by the express boat to Flåm from Bergen daily in the summer. It is... More

The lovely little while church is surrounded by a graveyard with at least one grave dating from the 1500s. Trees, flowers, benches - the bell tolling just added to the experience.
