I wanted to take this ferry just for the fun of crossing a part ov Lake Victoria. Unfortunately it is out of order for a couple of months now and harbour workwrs told me, it will need at leat another year to perform all maintenance works reqzired to have it back on the water again.

Sadly this ferry is no longer in operation. Engine failure made the service between Mwanza and Bukoba come t a halt. New ferry is promised by the president but still not in service up to now (November 2016)

There is nothing better than watching the sunset of Victoria. I would recommend anyone to visit. However, the mosquitos/ lake flies in the evening are not friendly. So much to do!

Taking the ferry from Mwanza to Bukoba is a great experience. Go 2nd class if traveling alone, for a 6-bunk shared room. 1st class if couple or with 1-2 kids. All this is mute though for now since the ferry hasn't been running since Dec 2014. There are many buses, which leave from Nyegezi bus stand. These are cheap and... More

Ok it is in Africa, and it's main purpose is to cart people and goods low cost from mwanza to Bukoba or Kemondo Bay, so we should expect too much but don't get fooled by 1st class because it is only a reflection of 3rd class. The cabin was airless, hot, noisy and I was glad of the 5am wake... More

Managed to get a first class bed on the day of travel by turning up at the booking office at 8am. Comfortable journey although hot in the cabin. I enjoyed watching the loading of the boat and how high the plantains were stacked in deck. Interesting conversations with the locals too.

Economical way to travel between Mwanza and Bukoba. 10-11 hour journey. Ist class 36,000 tsh (approx £10). 2nd class less comfortable - very hot. 3rd class guess!

The boat was for us the nicest way to cross from Uganda (bis from Kampala to Bukoba) to the western access into Serengeti (so we did not have to do a loop from and to Arusha). Apparently the roads between Bukoba and Mwanza are still pretty bad. And it's a safe way to travel overnight. We had a first class,... More
