Decent Trip, Highlight: Giant Reclining Buddha

A insightful trip learning about Chinese mythology and legend. Highlight of the trip would be the Giant Reclining Buddha, which is the length of the temple.!

DaFo Temple is an interesting way to spend an afternoon, but by no means is a must-see. The temple holds the largest reclining Buddha in China and is supposedly the place where Kublai Khan was born (although I'm not sure how they would prove this). It is a beautiful and peaceful temple, but not unlike other temples in China. If... More

Or if you prefer, daylight robbery. 40 yuan admittance for an "experience" which even if taken slowly lasts 15 minutes. An utter waste of both time and money. Only two buildings open, the main temple which takes two minutes to see and another smaller place which you can photograph (despite signs cautioning no pictures) with three snaps. I have to... More

The temple was better than we expected. It is nicely maintained and was very quiet and peaceful. We liked that very much. The grounds are big. Buildings are nice. The Buddha statue great. It was a nice visit. A must do in Zhangye.

The temple and the Giant Reclining Buddha are worth a look. The tour is in Chinese and there is little English explanation. The Qing Dynasty intact guild buildings were more interesting.

The Zhangye Giant Buddha Temple is great as the temple remains largely untouched for hundreds of years, except for essential repairs, hence it is quite a departure from the other rebuilt temples. There is a giant buddha inside and a display showing the internal construction of the giant buddha. It also has nice garden.

We went there on the departure day. Lazy walking from hotel, few pictures and go back. The Buddha was impressive. The temple is still used by people so even more interesting to see how they pray.

Dafo Temple is a beautiful complex of buildings and provides a quiet sanctuary amongst the hustle of Zhangye. Entry was ¥40 and we were lucky enough to have the place almost entirely to ourselves. The Giant Buddha hall is dimly lit and has a very peaceful atmosphere. The workmanship in the main statue as well as all of the accompanying... More

This is the Giant Buddha temple. Well worth a visit for that sake alone. The temple also offers a few other buildings you can visit including a museum like exhibit. Not a major attraction for non Buddhist travelers, but it's the main highlight within Zhangye city so it's easily worth to visit while traveling by to see the landscapes.

I'm always so amazed with temples. This is a must see if you're in Zhangye. It's not so hard to get here and you don't need much time. You don't get to see a giant buddha lying down everyday and so it was an eye opener!
