    A Beautiful Garden
A last minute decision saw me visit this beautiful garden on Mayday Bank Holiday Monday. The Rhododendron and Azalea displays were at their best. The gardens are beautifully laid out with many pathways in which to lose yourself. It's a photographers paradise. A lovely tearoom with plenty of outdoor seating served a good choice of cakes and light meals, there are toilets nearby. The Hall itself is not open to the public as it is still a private residence.

A little bit of heaven on earth
I'd had the recommendation from a friend who'd been two weeks before. It was a spontaneous decision because it was one of those summer Sunday's when England looks its best. It was delightful and I'll go again for sure as it's only 30 mins away.

Beautiful Gardens but let down by the pond scum and stagnant water
The Gardens are divine, quite simply just a perfect oasis. The Restaurant and food were great too with lovely staff; even though it was a busy day they were all so friendly. The only thing that let the place down was the disgusting pond scum covering the main lake. Not only is it aesthetically horrible to look at, but it's bad for the fish and all aquatic life. The water was murky and stagnant too. This was also the case with the other pools; they all had dark brown, murky, stagnant water. Every pool looked stale and unhealthy and I didn't see any fish in any of the pools. Another thing; we weren't handed a map on entry, which in my opinion is essential for first time visitors. Also, points 1, 2 & 3 on the map were cordoned off! Why? So we had to start from point 4. Apart from this I had a great day and will return. I really hope when I return the water quality is much improved.

    Don't miss this gem
My mother and I stumbled across Hodnet Hall lost en route to another destination. An annual plant sale was in progress and was well worth the entrance fee. As my mother is elderly exploring the gardens was not an option but worth a return trip alone. My only gripe as is with many UK public places in that offer refreshments is that they are never well organised. There appeared to be plenty of bodies buzzing around but slow progress in the serving department. Customers were queuing on slices of cake while others with only a sandwich were behind them. The drinks were tendered post payment which seemed odd as you have to inform the server what you had just paid for. Next time I will bring a flask and snack.

    Smashing interlaced ponds ...
This garden comprises a number of lovely different size ponds all neatly interlaced. We caught loads of differently coloured water Lilies in bloom. The surrounding flower boarders also had lots of colour and the rose beds exuded a gorgeous scent. You can’t visit the house, but can walk by the giant thistle flower boarders. The mock Tudor cafe has delightful drinks and cakes. We sat on the flower encircled lawn for ages, just soaking up the atmosphere on a sunny summers afternoon.

We visited on Wednesday 28th September and went straight to the cafe for a tea, coffee and toasted tea cake. (All good) Whilst there looked at lunchtime menue and said we would be back.
We were amazed at how well maintained the garden was and the drifts of Cyclemen are better than I have seen anywhere. We we so pleased we had decided to visit. The walled kitchen garden was als excellent.
We then went back for lunch at the cafe. I ordered the brisket in Yorkshire pudding and my wife the Quiche. My wife was concerned they did not take a table number for our food order and even went back after 10 min to check as the table we sat on had a number 22 on it but was told no its OK if we sit inside.
At least another 30mi went by and other people had eaten and left so my wife checked only to be told we had been forgotten as they had to identical orders.?
15 min later our food arrived mine was cold and my wife's quiche was under cooked. Mind went back and returned still cold but this time the Yorkshire pudding was also soggy.
We asked for our money back and left.
The garden deserves a 5 and the cafe a 1 so that's why I have scored a 3.
My advice is to take your own sandwiches and you will have a amazing time.

Just visited for the third time and the gardens are as lovely as ever. Earlier this year the azalea walk was an absolute must to see. This time all the summer plants were in full display. These gardens are so beautiful and peaceful and a credit to the team of gardeners. The walled garden is a must to see and is one of the first places we make for. The tea garden is excellent with a lovely choice of snacks and delicious cakes.
There is no children's playground and no shop just sheer peace and beauty and well worth the entry charge though you can use your 2-1 Gardeners World voucher.

It would be nice is there were some seats in the walled garden as it is quite a walk from the car park and tea garden and for those with mobility problems a sit to take in the lovely surroundings would be welcome. Perhaps this is something which the owners could give consideration to.

I believe the gardens are open on Sundays and bank holiday Mondays through to late September. We visited the gardens in glorious weather today, and really enjoyed them.

The car park was in a field just a short walk away from the start of a suggested walking route, which was shown on the map given to us at the payment booth on the road in. The route takes you around the hall, then down to a series of ponds which were alive with ducks, moorhens and a couple of swans. The map also offered extended walking routes for those who want to do a little more legwork.

There are some stone steps dotted around the 60+ acre site (full of really mature trees, shrubs and flowers) to help you change elevation, though very often there was a grassy slope either side of the steps. When we’d circumnavigated the ponds, we rejoined the main driveway and headed to the walled Kitchen Garden passing an ancient barn and a few young cattle en route. We also got a decent view of the renovated dovecote.

We finished-off with a Ploughman’s lunch, some sandwiches and tea at the pleasant tea room before returning to the car. Since there are benches thoughtfully distributed around the gardens, we saw a few people with picnics. We also saw many people walking dogs, though all on a lead.

All in all a super couple of hours in a very pretty part of the World.

Hodnet Hall gardens are open for only 2 days a week – Sundays and Wednesday from March until October, plus Bank Holiday Mondays.
The gardens are a delight with several walks around the lakes and woodland areas, most of which are easy, pretty level, gravelled paths. There are some steps which can be avoided.
The gardens were lovely to visit on a nice day in late summer, but I suspect are at their best in Spring and early summer.
Food and drink is available in a café run by two local caterers – Root Food on the day we were there. An excellent, inventive menu with food served in good time even when they were busy. There is indoor seating, but it was a delight to find a table in the adjacent garden area.

Beautiful peaceful place. The gardens are magnificent. Peaceful walks around the 3 lakes. It easy walking. The sound of the flowing water and the flowers and trees makes it very relaxing. When you finished your walk you then got the cafe with it selection of fresh food. The cake is to die for., all at a reasonable price. Can certainly recommend a visit.

Lovely garden with interest all year round. We try to visit at least once a year. This was our second visit this year. Lovely lunch then out in the sunshine to enjoy the autumn colour /fungi due to all the various trees and shrubs. Still some colour in the flower beds too. Spring - trees, flowering shrubs, plants and bulbs. Summer gorgeous borders as well as other plants. Always like to see what's happening in the well stocked kitchen garden. Parking can be limited after heavy rain. Well worth a visit. Dog friendly.
