I visited the Rongbuk Monastery while visiting EBC. While being located in a most inspiring place, the monastery is basic and simple, almost barren.

Rongphu Monastery and at the Geu La passes for some final views of Mt. Everest. Unfortunely they are under construction during when my visit, just to only feel outside view a part of monastery .

Rongbuk is a small monastery near Everest Base Camp with a stupa out front & a small courtyard inside the walls. It is worth a short stop on your way down from EBC as it is certainly a historic place in the world.

While at EBC, why not visit the world's highest monastery and come face to face with the monks and nuns here who practice a form of tantric Buddhism which forbids speaking. Very surreal!

A combined nunnery and monastery 8 km from EBC, offers some charm and an additional sightseeing opportunity apart from Everest itself. While no surprises await for those who have visited a Buddhist monastery before, its a nice stop when you are in the area.

Rongbuk Monastery is in western Tibet which requires special permits from Chinese authorities in addition to your China visa. I recommend you check with a tour operator that is based in Lhasa such as Tibetan Expeditions.
