    Sad truth about Cat Ba
All the info you find regarding Cat Ba describes pristine beaches and crystal clear waters. It is far from it. The beaches are covered with litter and the water is not clear, a lot of it is brown. There are 3 main beaches and we went to beach 1. It is small and crammed with people, with traffic chaos as more arrive. The main thing to do is boat trips which is what we want for. It was good but if we had known what we know now we would not have gone at all. As tourists we tried to choose sustainable activists and sadly, going to Cat Ba we are just adding to the problem.

    Go Cat Ba Island…
Great place to visit for all travelers. Many transport options from Hanoi, Ninh Binh. Etc. Gateway for cruises to Ha Long Bay and Lan Ha Bay. Many options for accommodations - hostel, Homestay hotels from 2-5 star. Great food, beaches, swimming, Kyak, caves and National Park. Lots to do. Food is wonderful.

Very impressive and stunning place on earth
Spent 4 days exploring Catba island with kayaking adventures, trekking and staying at local floating villages which is so special and unique. We had a excellent insight into local culture and food. It’s much better to see Halong bay from there to avoid the overcrowded Halong bay. A must-see in Asia

Extremely stunning place in the north of Vietnam
I spent 4 days exploring Cat Ba island with kayaking adventures, swimming, trekking and staying at local floating villages ( Việt Hải Village) which is so special and unique. We had a excellent insight into local culture and people there. A must-see and must-come place in Asia.

    Worth a stay
I would highly recommend a short stay on Cat Ba island. Lots of decent accommodation and a sweet little town. I would recommend a day cruise from there to Ha Long Bay rather than overnight cruise which is expensive and rather disappointing. I’d take a bike ride to the community farming village on the island. That was a great excursion. Spotlessly clean village with everyone contributing to making it work! Definitely worth a couple of days based on this island which is one of the largest in the archipelago…

Lovely island for a peaceful stay
Cat Ba is itself a destination for people visiting Halong bay. This island is the largest of all in the area and is easily accessible both by road and ferry. There are lots to explore in Cat Ba. There are three adjacent beaches Cat co 1, 2 and 3 separated by hills and promontory. The beaches are small but beautiful. Cat ba is rich is flora and fauna, hence the national and bio diversity park is a prime destination. If you upto doing some hiking you can enjoy the scenic view from atop the hills. Cat ba is a food paradise for people who don't shy away from eating variety of sea food. Special mention to the famous Vietnamese Banh mi is from a small shop in Cai Beo street run by ladies. In addition to the usual one they serve special banh mi cut into pieces and loaded with meat. One should try this out if in Cat Ba. Walking along the pier in the evening is also highly recommended where you can try other eateries with a variety of menu. Recommend fellow travellers to spend a lazy day in Cat ba and stroll around or hire a bike to explore on your own.

Good spot for day trips to the bay, but not much else
Not a lot to do here besides take boat trips through the bay. Lan Ha Bay is quieter than Ha Long Bay, but sadly still polluted. Once you've seen it, then that would likely be enough for most travelers. The hospital cave is interesting, but that can be seen in an hour. So I'd recommend 2 nights max. Despite good reviews, we didn't experience good food aside from the home stay/restaurant across from the Hospital Cave. Service wasn't very good in the restaurants. Overall, we found the town underwhelming, but what was most disruptive to any hope for peace and quiet is either karaoke at night or the loudspeakers that blast news or advertisements 4-7x/day.

Where and What:
Cat Ba Island is a 30-minute (local style) ferry ride or 15-minute cable car ride (the local taxi driver told us that nowadays the cable car only works during major holidays) away from Ha Long Bay. Given that most tourists would rather just stay on the main island that is Ha Long Bay, Cat Ba remains rather relatively unknown and rather empty when we visited. We bumped into less than 10 foreigners when we were about the Cat Ba town, which we loved. Some tourists might call it dilapidated, but that also means it remains the way it always has been - home to the locals, relatively untouched. Quite cool to see the local kids engage in "Mario Kart" kinda racing in the town's main square as their night activity. Innocent fun.

Stay:
Quite a few homestays have sprung up on the island, but wanting to splurge a little, we decided to stay at Flamingo Resort for a dip in the stunning pool that literally wraps around a mountain, the jacuzzi, the buffets inclusive in the hotel price, as well as a stunning view of the beach and islands scattered around this private protected bay.

Do:
As opposed to the litter-filled and congested boat scene over at Ha Long Bay, Cat Ba and our day tour to the surrounding Lan Ha Bay remains a peaceful one, with less than three tourist boats in sight at any one time when we were on the bay. We engaged a junk boat for our group of eight, visited a local fish farm, canoed and landed on some totally unmarked beaches (and marked ones like "Ba Trai Dao" aka "Three Peaches" beach), showered and rested in the "hotel room" on board, had some local delicacies whipped up by our only two humble local crew members... simple fun. You could also climb the mountain and explore some caves over at the Cat Ba National Park, just some 30-minute ride away.

Hope Cat Ba Island remains the haven that it is.
