If you are an archaeologist this museum has some little gems of information. Look out for the model of the lake and the maps of the various sites. Worth the visit. Friendly assistant too.

All the articles are from around the lake. The succession of rulers, including Genghis Khan and Tamerlane, is chronicled. There is a big section on the orally-transmitted epic poem Manas. The nomad lifestyle and traditions are covered, including musical instruments, jewelry, rugs and clothing. There is some material on the Soviet era. Add a little natural history and there you have the history of the zone! Some of the signage is in English, but not all. No pictures allowed unless you pay a fee.

Very informative museum with a lot more captions in English than I expected. The museum covers a wide range of Kyrgyz history from coins, pots, Manas tellers, weapons, carpets and more. The state history museum in Bishkek was closed, so this museum provided a lot of useful information I was after. The museum is situated near the town centre so I would definitely recommend a visit. The rooms are arranged in some kind of order, but not chronologically as for example the artefacts relating to WW2 comes after before the history of the Kyrgyz people, but still the displays are interesting enough to spend some time reading.

This museum has a good collection of Kyrgyz history. It is fortunate that they have docents that speak English otherwise you won’t be able to understand the exhibits.

We checked out the Historical Museum in Cholpon Ata last August near the end of our drive around the ‘stans. It is a small museum with lots of great information about the region and the country that we have come to know as “the most beautiful natural country in the world” ™ (yes I have now trademarked it, please contact for details). The English descriptions are limited but our three months in Central Asia and the Caucuses had opened our ears and eyes a lot to the language so we were able to understand enough of it to manage. Great place for a visit.

Decent introduction to Kyrgyz culture and history. English signs end about half way through, but enjoyable nevertheless.

Most of us know little about the history and culture of Central Asian countries. This little museum is a good place to start. We were lucky to get a charming and enthusiastic English speaking guide. She helped to flesh out the stories behind the brief multi-language signs.
Many of the artifacts come from local archaeological finds, including underwater discoveries from the nearby lake. There is also information about the Manas story, traditional clothing, crafts, author Chingiz Aitmatov, yurts, etc

And...the price is more than reasonable.

What an amazing experience. For a small museum, the place is jam-packed with artefacts and memorabilia. Sadly most are in Russian, but we were fortunate to have a military person who happened to visit the museum at the same time, offering to give us explanations which was just great.

They have an excellent model of the Issel-Kul Lake with background which makes the visit really beneficial. The museum is very centrally located and on the Main Road of Cholpon Ata.
