We visited on a very cold and windy day. We even had a snow shower while there. We still enjoyed the visit. It's not for anyone with mobility problems due to the walk from the visitor centre to the fort which is all uphill. Staff at the visitor were the least friendly and helpful I've ever come across at a... More

spectacular moorland location, and information gives good understanding of the roman occupation of britain and the challenges faced by the soldiers on the wall. The landscape is simply stunning. Easy 25 minute drive to The Pheasant pub.

We arrived early and found it was £4 to park but had no change (poor planning I know). As the card payment was not working and the visitor centre didn't open we did a 10 mile d-tour to get some change. Once in there was a further charge to look at the Fort which, because we were early, wasn't open... More

If you have been to different roman forts - this one is not exceptional. However, the views are fab and English Heritage has put together a great little museum. Best part, you can walk on the wall for a bit!

Housesteads is just one of those places that is a must-see. If you're reasonably keen, and it's a clear day, take the national trust's recommended walk from housesteads to sycamore gap (famous from the Robin Hood : prince of thieves movie). Views of Northumberland are stunning. Friendly and helpful staff. Ice creams highly appreciated and not extortionate.

We had limited time on a return journey south and chose to stop at Housesteads out of the many sites along Hadrian's Wall (we're also EH members). The site is clearly signposted from the A69 and there is ample parking (although not free for EH or NT members, £4 per stay). Toilets and a smallish cafe/shop/ticket office are next to... More

Nice walk up to the fort and enough to see, museum is small so if you have your dog no great loss to miss that bit. Nice little walk up the wall and some amazing views to the west so don't miss that!!

Housesteads is a Roman fortress along Hadrian's Wall and is a fairly easy drive from Durham or Newcastle. There also appears to be a local bus that runs yo Hexham Station. Only the ruins of the fort still stand today, but given their age (and the tendency of locals to repurchase Roman stone over the subsequent centuries), it's really amazing... More

My 'average' rating is no reflection on the impressive site, which gives an evocative impression of what life must have been like defending the frontier from attacks from the north. I just had a couple of minor frustrations - first, the place claims to be dog-friendly at them main entrance, but then we were told we would need to leave... More
