RSPB Loch Garten Osprey Centre sits amidst the stunning Caledonian...

RSPB Loch Garten Osprey Centre sits amidst the stunning Caledonian pineforest, just a short walk from the shores of beautiful Loch Garten. The centre is open every day from April 1 to the first weekend in September, though the rest of the reserve is open all year round. It opens at 10am till 6.00pm, and last entry is at 5.00pm. There is a viewing area in the centre, with binoculars and telescopes to view the ospreys and other wildlife, plus live hi-definition CCTV pictures to give really good close up views of the birds on the nest. Red squirrels can often be seen on our feeders and a large array of small birds visit too. There are always knowledgeable and friendly staff and volunteers on hand to help you make the most of your visit and presentations on the previous year's osprey season are also given. There are activities and games for children both in the centre and on the walk up from the car park. The Osprey Centre shop stocks binoculars and telescopes, gifts, toys, cards, hot and cold drinks, ice creams and snacks. There are picnic benches and garden benches outside if the weather allows! Two beautiful woodland walks take you through magnificent pine forest to tranquil Loch Garten and Loch Mallachie - one accessed from the Osprey Centre car park and the other from the nearby Loch Mallachie car park.

Its expensive for non members to visit as it costs 5 pounds per adult. You then have a short walk around to the hide where you look through binoculars to see the Osprey nest which is built so high that if the birds are sitting on the nest you can only see them via the cameras. We spent over half... More

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit and we're sorry you found it disappointing. Unfortunately we can't do anything about the height of the osprey nest - ospreys usually nest at the top of tall trees with a good commanding view over the area so they can check for intruding ospreys and crows etc. When the chicks... Watching the ospreys was amazing. I learned so much from my visit. The talk given was informative and despite arriving close to closing time we were made to feel welcome.

Had wanted to go here for a long time but I was rather disappointed. We got there early for the Capercaillie watch. Didn't mind not seeing a Capercaillie that's bird watching! but then they said they'd had it running for 5 weeks and had only had 2 quick sightings! If they'd mentioned that on the website I wouldn't have bothered... More

Hi Barbara, Thanks for taking the time to review your visit to Caper-watch. We're sorry you had a disappointing visit. Caper-watch has been very disappointing this year, with just those two sightings. We suspect that the lek may have moved, as can happen when the dominant male changes his stance, or when the females decide to move to another lek.... More

Ospreys were on the eggs so were head down most of the time but the staff were very helpful and informative and there is plenty of other wildlife to see.

Thank you! You're right - not just ospreys, but red squirrels, great spotted woodpeckers, siskins, voles, crested tits, crossbills...not to mention more forest than you could throw a stick at! Thanks for visiting and reviewing. More

We were lucky enough to visit in early May when EJ and Odin were sharing nest sitting duties. The wardens and volunteers are knowledgeable about their subject and do not mind answering questions. The cameras make it easy to watch the ospreys, or indeed other wildlife -- such as red squirrel or capercaille. The Abernathy woods also provides a quiet... More

Great facility showcasing the Ospreys, 3 eggs in the nest when we visited that are expected to hatch next week. Lots of information available on these impressive birds and plenty of positions to view the nest. Live camera streaming of the nest is shown on large screens. Well worth a visit

i have been wanting to see this place from the first time i'd heard of these fascinating " fish eagles " . it was a dream come true , the only ospreys i had seen was by chance so to have them on tap so to speak was amazing, and i just have to mention the staff who were really... More

You do need to pay, I think £3, to go up to the RSPB hut which is well staffed and has several cameras directed at the best. The best can be seen but although there are telescopes it's hard to see clearly without the aid of the cameras. Great when the birds fly though. All the staff were very knowledgable... More

Thanks for visiting and for your review, Mary. We're pleased you had a good time at the centre. £3 is the concession rate, otherwise it's £5 for an adult, £2 for U16's, or £10 for a family ticket (up to two adulst and four children) RSPB members get in for free. More

Stopped in at the Osprey Centre during our stay in the area, it is an RSPB reserve and they look after the local habitat as well as the birds. When we visited there was a nesting female 'EJ' on three eggs. Within 15 minutes we saw the male 'Odin' arrive with a fish for her, apparently he had gone out... More

A lovely review, thank you! And great timing for your visit! We're pleased you had a good time and enjoyed Loch Garten too. Odin is now being kept busy feeding hungry chicks - so even more fish are coming in to the nest. More
