About
Scampston Walled Garden is a contemporary garden quite unlike any other. Set within the 18th century walls of the original kitchen garden for Scampston Hall, today the walled garden has an exciting and unashamedly modern feel, complementing the adjacent 18th century ‘Capability’ Brown parkland. Within the walled garden, visitors are invited to journey through the contrasting rooms that make up this plantsman’s paradise. Designed by renowned Dutch plantsman Piet Oudolf, the garden includes a striking perennial meadow, contemporary waves of grass and a contemplative ‘silent garden’. Scampston also invites visitors to explore the traditional Hall gardens and ‘Capability’ Brown parkland, which offer beautiful walks and scenic views. The Garden Café sits within the walled garden and offers delicious home-made lunches and cream teas.

Great place to visit
Oct 2021
We were very lucky to have beautiful weather which showed off the autumn colours. The gardens are so interesting but also take the short Cascade Circuit walk through the parklands and enjoy the lake and trees. Staff were lovely and so friendly, food was delicious and everything was clean and covid safe.

Well worth a visit
Oct 2021
It was a cold, rainy and windy day but despite the weather we really enjoyed our visit. The map was very useful to help us negotiate our way around the garden and parkland but our tip is to go to the top of the mound which gives a great overview of the garden. The exhibition areas within the conservatory are interesting, we particularly liked the Head Gardener's office and the history boards. We intend to return, hopefully in summer next year to see a different colour scheme and maybe some work on the rock garden. We had lunch in the cafe which was tasty and well presented by the staff who were very friendly as was the lady in the admissions office.

Highly recommended
Oct 2021 • Family
We had the pleasure of visiting the walled gardens today, my Daughter, 4 year old Granddaughter and me. Unfortunately the weather was miserable but this did not spoil our fun. The car park was close to the entrance and the Lady that welcomed us at the ticket office was a diamond. She obviously loved Scampton and sold it like a champion, so much so that we took advantage of the low cost of the yearly pass and bought a pumpkin to carve at home. We took part in the witches snd wizards adventure and the other child friendly activities in the beautiful and varied walled gardens. We expected Mr Mcgregor and Peter Rabbit to be hiding in the vegetable gardens but they hid so well that we must return to find them. We had a lovely lunch in the cafe, lots of choice of quality food and drinks, again the staff could not be more helpful and friendly. Absolutely fabulous experience, can't wait to return.

A really enjoyable visit and well worth doing
Aug 2021
We stopped here on a mid to late August Friday morning prior to heading further north. There is a large grassy car park across the road from the entrance. It was somewhat slow actually getting in but £8.50 for the gardens and grounds is good value but was free to us as HHA members.

The walled gardens had pleasant borders but not too much colour and understandably they were probably a little past their best for the year. Nevertheless there were some nice seats to admire the neat topiary and water features including the fountain. In the adjacent conservatory there was an excellent illustrated history of the gardens which was well worth seeing.

Unusually for me, I enjoyed the lovely grounds more than the gardens. The Capability Brown designed Palladian Bridge at the end of the water lingers in the memory and gives great photo opportunities. A nice walk to the 'ice home' which had a helpful explanatory note. On the way back you walk past a Sweet Chestnut tree from the 1700's - what that must have seen over the years.

There is a good sized cafe just inside the entrance with decent toilets. Regrettably it seems grey squirrels were introduced to Yorkshire by an owner of yesteryear as per a display board.

In summary, Scampston is well worth a visit and the gardens and grounds are still clear in my memory whereas if you visit quite a few in a short time, some fade somewhat in the memory but not Scampston.

Wonderful designed garden and walks
Oct 2021
Wonderful large walled garden - several varied 'rooms' and a mixture of planting - well use of grasses a speciality of the Dutch designer - lots of interesting modern sculptures placed within the borders - choice of two longer walks available around the estate which was designed by Capability Brown. Enjoyed lunch - good selection and value - had to queue and pay outside due to covid precautions - this was ok as the weather was fine. Plant stalls too.

Thanks for your feedback, Veronica. It sounds like you had a lovely visit and enjoyed the specialist planting within the walled garden. Do visit us again at a different point in the season when the walled garden looks very different but equally beautiful.

Lovely Walled Gardens and walks in the Grounds
Sep 2021
We walked around the grounds following the blue trail, the grounds are extensive and you can take both short and longer walks, the route takes you past the house and over the Palladian bridge designed by Capability Brown, then you walk along the side of the lake and around and back to the walled gardens. The walled gardens are lovely but we didn't think the sculpture exhibition suited the gardens and we thought there were far to many of them, they were all over the gardens which impacted on taking photographs of the lovely gardens and plants.

Thank you for leaving some feedback on your recent visit to Scampston. It's wonderful that you took the time to enjoy our parkland trail routes. We understand that the sculpture exhibition within the walled garden may not be to everyone's taste. It is a temporary exhibition that has been with us for two months and is due to finish soon. We do hope you'll visit us again at a different point in the season.

Worth a visit
Sep 2021
Visited mid October, lovely grounds to wander around within the walled garden. Perhaps would have been a bit more colourful in the summer. I would say more benches are desperately needed scattered around the gardens. We also walked one of the trails (one was partly shut due to flooded area), really enjoyed our few hours there. The cafe was well organised for COVID safety, take away food was readily available but few benches to sit and eat them, food was very reasonably priced. Would recommend a visit for

Lovely but shame about the sculptures
Sep 2021 • Couples
Absolutely wonderful garden, we loved it. So interesting to explore...but all those sculptures really ruined it especially the one by the pond in the Silent Garden that obstructed the view beyond Such a shame.

Wonderful Garden spoilt by all the sculptures for sale everywhere.
Sep 2021
Scampston Walled Garden is a brilliantly conceived design.

At the moment there are "hundreds" of smallish modern sculptures placed everywhere you look They are all for sale. The sheer number of them ruins the character and ambiance of this beautiful garden.

Thank you for providing some feedback about your recent visit to Scampston. We're sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your visit to our walled garden on this occasion. The current sculpture exhibition is designed to showcase up and coming artists from around the country and we believe that it has provided a brilliant platform to share their work with our visitors. We've received some wonderful comments about the diversity of the sculptures and has inspired a number of our visitors. We do, however, understand that this isn't for everyone and we hope that you'll visit our gardens again another time.
