Beautiful 13th century Cathedral, untouched by time
Jul 2018 • Couples
This beautiful Cathedral was built in 1210 at the order of the King. The rustic wooden floor planks and rough-hewn stone of the interior tell the story of a church built with materials transported through the mountains, with 13th century transportation, constructed by a community of only 400, but that makes its splendor shine all the more. My great-great-great-great-grandfather was baptized in this church in 1767 and later emigrated to the US as a young man, so Santa Maria and San Vicente de la Barquera are very special to me. The Cathedral is a short walk from the castle, built in the same period, and both provide a stunning view of the bay.

Nice exterior, plan your visit to get inside
Mar 2018 • Couples
The exterior of the church seemed interesting, however we unfortunately arrived there just after 1 pm when the church closes until 4 pm. Shame that we could not check the interior. The views from the church's hill are also nice.

Great location, beautiful church
Sep 2017 • Couples
The church is located in the old town of San Vicente de la Barquera in Cantabria, Spain. The place offers excellent views of the surrounding countryside and the town. The entrance fee was 1.50 Euro. Not so impressive outside, the church has magnificent altars. It is located on the pilgrims' route to Santiago de Compostela and there is a hostel providing accommodation for the pilgrims. Worth visiting!

Stunning location
Sep 2017 • Couples
Walked up to church through old part of town, past the castle. Excellent views from this place of the town, beach, and estuary. Paid 1.5€ to go into the church - worth it for the magnificent altars and the marble tombs. Could have done with a sheet in English to explain some of the features. Beautiful mirador behind church again with spectacular views. Worth the walk.

Beautiful
Aug 2017 • Couples
Though simple on the outside, this church is quite beautiful and peaceful inside. It's located along the camino to Santiago, the route that the pilgrims take. Outside of the church there are nice views of the countryside. Well worth a visit!

Beautiful and Peaceful
Jul 2017 • Couples
The church is set high above the town so you get super views around the town and countryside.
The church is not the most impressive outside but it does have a long history an it located on the pilgrims route to Santiago - there is a hostel adjacent.
Inside it is a very calm and impressive church, full of history and artwork.
If you are in the area this is a place you must visit.

History to view
Apr 2017 • Couples
There is so much history that you are best to have a Spanish guide with you or else you may miss out on the story behind the buildings .

blown away
Sep 2016 • Couples
love churches but not keen on religion. even so some places have a calmness and spirituality about them. beautiful building/ even the polished block floor is something to behold.

I think that it's part of the pilgrimage route and has obviously been important for a long time. There are the remains of a hospital and a complex of walls and paths leading to the castle and down to the river. There are rooms available for pilgrims too.

It stands on a hill with the river on both sides. Views over the river and to the Picos de Europa led us to divert our road trip in the direction of the mountains

Must mention the lovely lady on the door who was so welcoming and proud of her church.

Beautiful Church with Breathtaking Views
Mar 2016 • Family
Beautiful church which is worth the walk up the hill. Very ornate at the front, with gold covered carvings. We visited on Easter Sunday and there was some lovely singing happening; young people dressed in sailor uniforms singing and playing the tambourine towards the Madonna. Outside, the views of the surrounding mountains are spectacular.
