Fort George, is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, if not Europe. Its garrison buildings, artillery defenses bristling with cannons and a superb collection of arms - including bayoneted muskets, pikes, swords and ammunition pouches - provides a fascinating insight into 18th-century military life. Living history programme, audio tour available in six languages and a children's trail.

I was actually stationed here from Nov 85 to Jan 87 with my battalion. Windy and isolated yet welcoming and always interesting. Never a dull day at the Fort! Grandson loves coming and we always attend the Tattoo in early September as a family and have a great night out.

As a Historic Scotland member I really wanted to tick this one off. The structure is amazing. Just looking at how it was designed and built it is astounding. It isn't a castle, and it isn't like many other Historic Scotland properties as there isn't a huge amount of interpretation around. I think you need to be pretty interested in... More

Something about this place transports you back in time which you don't really see until you enter the Fort and once there it is a special place. Lots of History

Most people who visit Inverness know its there, but few bother to visit. If this was in the central belt it would be a top attraction. Architecture, views, museum and all with a bit of highland hospitality make this a must do in inverness area. Staff were fantastic and very helpful. Only downside was how cold and exposed the place... More

A brilliant example of Georgian architecture which still stands to tell us about our history. It took a few hours to explore and would have been longer if the historic barrack rooms had been open. Despite a main attraction of this site being closed I couldn't speak more highly of this. It does tend to be cold in winter we... More

Was at the event by Historic Scotland on 2014 and 2015 - full days entertainment. The fort itself is the star!

The fort is in a fantastic location the views are stunning. We spent about three hours exploring everything and found it very informative and well presented. The museum is well worth a visit with a great number of exhibits. Toilets were clean and although we didn't use the cafe it looked very nice. Would certainly recommend a visit. If you... More

Wow what a great visit this is. The fort is an immense collection of very old buildings in an area behind ramparts and a huge moat. It is absolutely amazing in its entirety and is still used as a forces base for the highlanders. There is a fantastic museum to the highlanders which really merits a separate visit to be... More

Set out on a spur into the Moray Firth, this living Fort is still in use. We have never quite seen anything like this and we have visited many fortifications around the world. Visit this site and you will not be disappointed. There are cannons, films, ramparts, moats, bastions, semi bastions, museums, spectacular views and priceless weapons collections. Ample excellent...
