Mahamaham tank is a very famous place in Kumbakonam and every 12 years Hindus celebrate Mahamaham festival, people from all over India come to visit this place and they take a dip in the Mahamaham lake and visit Lord Shiva. They believe it purifies them and gets rid of their sins.

This tank is believed to purify our soul from all the sins. The tank is situated on the main town and its very near to the Adhi Kumbeshwarar temple and other important temples of Kumbakonam. Its a must visit place in Kumbakonam.

Tank was big with surrounding fences. There are steps on all sides to access the tank. When we went there were some water stored in the tank. This is where the Mahamaham event happens once in every 12 years.

A Must-go place during Mahamaham which happens once in 12 years to cleanse yourself and to get rid of "sins" accumulated. Learn about the rich history before visiting the place

We need more such water tanks in the midst of every town to provide a pleasant view and cool breeze in the hot weather. This is a temple tank which has religious significance with religious festival held every 12 years attracting thousand of devotees to bathe in its water. The steps are very slippery where it touches the water.

The pilgrims are expected to enter into the temple with purity and for this purpose, they used to take bath in the lake and then enter into the temple so that they can have a clean worship of the God. The mahamaham temple at Kumbakonam is... More
