Lovely old Abbey with an interesting history, A picturesque ruin run by English Heritage.

We stopped off at Netley Abbey for a picnic on a sunny day. It's owned by English Heritage, but free to enter. It has a small car park, but it wasn't busy - not sure if it ever is? We did have a bit of a problem finding it - we missed the entrance 3 times - a sign opposite... More

A strict order of Monks founded this Abbey in the 12th Century. Henry the VIII had it demolished, but the ruins then became a courtiers house after some clever alterations. By Victorian times it was a ruin romantically covered with ivy and famed for picnickers. A few picnickers on a hot April day were in the beautiful natural grounds. I... More

I had heard that the ruins of Netley Abbey had inspired writers but I couldn't understand how. Having visited for the first time I can see why - I still don't really understand it but I felt it. Real shame though that it is an unattended site with no guides, no refreshments and particularly no toilets. For this reason I... More

Decided to visit as it's only 10 minutes from our home! It is one of those places that you only hear about rather than know about. It's an English heritage site but it's FREE! You could spend maybe 30 minutes looking around; there's amazing architecture! Definitely worth a visit!

The Abbey is pretty interesting, there's probably a few people who live in Hound Parrish that appreciate it and visit regularly, it's a bit like when I see people who live dead opposite the general hospital in Southampton, I say ..oooh! It's handy if you cut your finger or something and need some late night stitches.. And they look at... More

Great place to wander around for an hour or so. It's free which is always a bonus however the car park is very small; enough room for about 8 cars if people park sensibly (about 5 of they don't!). Its an English Heritage property which is well looked after. There are a few boards dotted around with information but it... More

This is a really lovely monument/ ruin/ abbey call it what you will. Extremely well kept, very beautiful, and can you believe it for such a large site free!!! It is vast, romantic and picturesque. Quite hard to find in that the sign, the only sign as far as we could see, is on a gate which is opened inwards... More

Very peaceful and easy to get to. Good for relaxing and lots to actually learn over there. Also a good spot for a wedding (if you can book the venue £££)

Another abbey ruin to wander over, BUT, this one is FREE and really a great find. It's easy to allow your imagination to "build" the scene as it might have been with the stained glass windows and walls with sculptures and the ceiling decorated. With gowned monks moving quietly through the great hall and the chapels quietly chanting or praying.... More
