Being in Saint Petersburg for a few days is a once in a lifetime event for most people, so when one does get to there, make the most of it! A guided tour of Catherine Palace with transport by coach is a whole day's trip. The castle has been torn down and rebuilt 6 times, each time on a mind... More

Of course it is over the top - it was meant to impress. Very reminiscent of Versailles. So much gilding and so many mirrors but absolutely beautiful dining areas and the inlaid floors are magnificent.

It's an interesting experience to walk through this palace with its many golden rooms. Each room tells a story of the inhabitants of the royalty of the palace that once resided there. May be boring for little children and not advisable because there's plenty of things one shouldn't touch.

We spent a sunny day there, meandering through the gardens, touring the palace, enjoying the day. Fantastic.

The palace interior really dazzles - I've never seen so much gold. It's very beautiful, and the size can be appreciated by looking through a doorway and seeing the seemingly endless doorways stretching a very long way. After several golden rooms it was pleasant to see a few with paintings. In the famous Amber room, photos aren't supposed to be... More

We visited Catherine Palace while on a cruise. We were forced into a tour because we did not realize that we needed a Visa to enter Russia (unfortunate miscommunication?? and lack of obvious follow through on our part). The tour did not disappoint and the palace was one of the definite highlights. Because it was summer and it is a... More

In an effort to out do the French in gaudy, the Russian Queen does full blast. Leave a lot of time and hope for a nice stay. Great art collection.

i spent the day walking around the grounds with a dear friend, unfortunately I picked the day it was closed to visitors, I will go back and see it from the inside, we picked a beautiful day so didn't feel like I missed anything.
