Most of the 'Tourist Information Offices' in Karakol are travel agencies, more interested in selling than informing.

This one is the official office. Helpful English speaking staff, and a good selection of maps, hiking guides, postcards etc.

100m south of the Post Office.

We were very satisfied with the services of your young, helpful and nice staff. The future of KGZ is in good hands :-). Everything was done according to agreed conditions. The services were excellent and the price was reasonable. We were on a trip to Ala Kul with your guide Erlan. He is very polite, wise and likeable young man. He motivated us to handle the difficult ascent. We also talked about life in KGZ. Everything necessary was arranged perfectly. We had very pleasant adventurous days in the beautiful nature of KGZ. Thank you Erlan and Zhyldyz.

This tourist information centre is organised by the local university and doesn't have any link with local businesses (as the other places have), so they provide independent information on the area and on local tours and activities.
The centre is fully managed by local university students, so they can have work experience and practice English. That means that at certain times of year it may be closed or have limited availability as the students are sitting exams or attending lectures.
They have a small sample bar there, if you want you can try the local produce (horse milk and other drinks and food) at a very affordable price. This is also managed and supplied by the students.
They provide detailed and independent information, some of them are students of tourism and other of English language.
They have a tips box, as any money they get from the bar or tips is shared by the students volunteering there.
If you go to other tourist information centres, they are all linked to a local business providing tours, so you will only be offered the tours that they have, not all the available options.
I went there and I got all the information I needed, I had the opportunity to chat with the students while trying some horse milk. After that, I took a tour to a valley nearby.
They also have a small souvenir shop and postcards.

Completely close half May, as well as CBT in front. There was a phone number on the door. We called, asked about a day tour to red rocks. A man answered that he had no information about that. Very strange. We walked 100m and saw EKO tourist information, which was a small travel agency. Very friendly service, prices ok. A lot of information and pictures. We booked 3 excursions, each for one day, two with normal car KIA, nice driver, walkef with us. Last trip amazing, 36 years old best Russian jeep with very experienced driver.
So better come here and skip Tourist Information.

We went there to enquire about horse trekking. The lady working there spoke extremely good English and was very helpful, showing us different options.

When I went there, two young local people were busy playing on their computers. They just answer m "hello", they did not ask me anything, they did not talk, they did not move from their seats;at one point, I asked them some information about a book I would have liked to buy, but as they were less than willing to help, I just left the place and went to anotherprivate information center where the man was very kind and helpful. I wonder what these people are doing there and why they have chosen to work in this Tourist Information Center !

I went there for ask the information about the horse riding tour and other information. However, the staff which is the only one in the CBT said he cannot provide me any information because he is new volunteer which has been started working here for a month only. He know nothing even if he is a local!
