It's not actually a museum, and it doesn't open all the time, it has some displays and do run some events, but events are rare. Displays, events are boring in the first place.... One thing , hard to find a car park, and the bus are in frequent( meant to run every 5 mins but realistically more like every 60... More

The Australian Army's Victoria Barracks in Sydney is a direct working link back to the earliest days of the settlement of Australia and the establishment of the colony of New South Wales. It is a magnificent Regency-style building built of Hawkesbury sandstone by convicts between 1841 and 1846. The main barrack block, which is believed to be the longest sandstone... More

Victoria Barracks is a short bus ride from the centre of Sydney. Every Thursday at 10 am a dedicated band of guides who are all retired servicemen will take you on a tour of the buildings which are open to the public. This is still a working Defence establishment so some areas are off limits. Around the parade ground are... More

Yeah so European settlement here was just 230 years ago so don't expect history like Europe & the UK. This place was a working garrison/barracks more that a century ago but no more. These days it's basically offices in a mix of heritage building and new ones enclosed by a sandstone/brick wall. The main building is impressive facing the grassed... More

I met my husband here 52 years ago and hadn't been back. It was great to see that the place was still being used as a secure venue, and to see the chapel and museum which weren't there in the early 60s. (Maybe the chapel was, but I didn't know!)

Guided by a retired Army vet you get the full story of the 175 year history of this site. Both 11yo & 9yo were kept interested and I had no idea... More

This is the largest barracks in the southern hemisphere and has been continually occupied since 1840. You can visit on Thursday from 10:00 to 1:00. The guides are older, retired military gentlemen and will give you an individual tour at no charge. The barracks are interesting, historic buildings and the guides have plenty of information and personalized stories. The guides... More
