- cito2Lexington, South Carolina26 contributionsBeautiful watersWest bay and Roatan was great. Before our trip we we always stock up and our travel gear from traveladdicts.shop . In Roatan be mindful that “winter” is there rainy season so it will rain. Also there are many people in mopeds and motor bikes that wip around you. When you get to west bay beach be prepared for the beach peddlers they are relentless.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 January 2024

Loved seeing conch shells on the floor, colorful fish. Go when tide is lowest for best snorkel views. Stayed at west end and took $5 water taxi to the beach. Unfortunately bad weather kept water taxis from running so grabbed a car taxi to get back to west end. (Glad we stayed at West End because West Bay is even more touristy.)Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024
- okcm144Oklahoma68 contributionsGreat experience at West Bay Beach3 couples on this self guided excursion from Princess Cruise ship. I contacted Larson Bodden via email for the trip to West Bay Beach. He was the BEST! Every contact was very professional, and quick. We met him outside the walk through entrance that goes to the street at the port. This was the only area that was questionalble about safety. He/We found each other by mentioning his name to the others that were there offering excursions. They all seemd to know him. He had a private van for 6 with air and good seating. The trip to and from the beach were uneventful and good. He even bought us beer and water on the trip to the beach. After arriving and getting us setup, we agreed on a return time and he left us in good hands. The entry cost included chairs and internet, but the umbrellas were $10. Yes you need the umbrellas and there are not enough for all, so get them asap. We all had a good time, and really appreciate Larson Bodden for the help. His contact is larsonbodden41@gmail.com. He and his son operate their business, so feel confidient in either person for your trip!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024

- Mike D4 contributionsLarson Bodden transport on Roatan - excellentWe met Larson Bodden on our way out of the port as previously arranged. Larson’s communications were excellent and he was really pleasant and told us all about his family. We walked a short way out of the port to his car that was clean, air-conditioned and in good order. We had arranged to go to Fosters at West Bay Beach and that turned out to be a good decision as it was a beautiful white sandy beach with crystal clear blue water with the reef some way off shore ( boat needed). We were asked by Larson for $20 each for the entrance fee to Fosters resort (although the wristband had $15 on it….bit of a mystery!?). The entrance fee covered the hire of sunbeds and use of showers and restrooms for the day. We pitched ourselves in front of the bar and then there was another $5 requested for each umbrella required….although we only needed 2 umbrellas as they were very large and most of us were in the water snorkelling anyway. Drinks at the bar were very reasonable ($4 for a Corona) although we didn’t try any food, it looked and smelled lovely and wasn’t expensive. After taking a boat out to snorkel the reef, that was a bit expensive at $60 each, we discovered that you could actually wade out to the reef from in front of the Infinity resort at the far end of the beach but it was very busy there and for us, snorkelling out over the main reef was a good experience (be aware getting back on the boat after snorkelling was not easy as the access ladder was rather makeshift!). We had negotiated the transport price up front and Larson was happy that we pay him on our return to the port. He charged $25 per person for the transport there and back, that seemed reasonable. Larson was very prompt to pick us up after our day at the beach and was a careful safe driver. Overall it was just what we were looking for and although the boat trip seemed a bit pricy it was overall good value for money. I was glad we made contact with Larson before we got off the ship and didn’t have to bother with the hordes of taxi drivers vying for customers at the port exit. I would very much recommend Larson, but just ensure you fix all the prices before you commit yourself! Also all payments were required in cash, so have plenty with you as it disappeared fast and there is no ATM at the resort. Thank you Larson, much appreciated.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 February 2024
- dynamanWimberley, Texas225 contributionsLove being hereThis is my favorite beach in Roatan. Many great restaurants on the beach to pick from from bar food to fine dining. Cruise ships do bring customers to this beach in the day, but by 3pm most are gone. They help support the restaurants and after they leave you have the beach and business much less crowded and many run specials for the locals. Great snorkling also Many choices in lodging in easy walking distance or on the beachVisited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 March 2024

Answered be promptly , picked us up where he said he would , took us to a beach and picked us up to take us back to ship. Very nice, reliable and did not take us to every gift shop along the way. We wanted to go to a beach and that is where he took us. Fare is very reasonable. The beach was fine, a little touristy but not too crowded. We had chairs , umbrellas and beverages. Very nice day! Thank you Larson !Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2024

We made sure to go on a non cruise ship day as we heard it can get absolutely packed. Thursday and Friday morning was great- we walked alll the way down to the far west end to the wall- awesome snorkeling all the way out to the rock!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 May 2024

My wife and I recently visited Roatan and had the opportunity to visit both West Bay and West End. West BAY and West END, are very close together, have very similar names but offer VERY DIFFERENT experiences. This is my rating for West BAY.
West BAY is the home of Roatan's major resorts. The resorts offer typical resort amenities like big swimming pools, lots of beach chairs and umbrellas, crowds on the beach, usually an attached restaurant, lots of beach activities and LOTS of people. There is a beautiful reef just offshore in easy swimming distance which does offer excellent snorkeling. There are also lots of nearby restaurants and shops and lots of locals offering all kinds of excursions and selling everything. The "vibe" is that of a typical resort town with people everywhere. Some people love that experience and, if you do, West BAY may be the place for you. However, in my opinion, there is little reason to travel to a place like Roatan for that experience.
West END, although only a 5 minute taxi ride (or 10 minute boat taxi ride) from West BAY is entirely different. It is more authentic Roatan. The beach (very nice by the way) is not crowded although you might have some local kids swimming nearby. You can get a beach chair but, unless you are staying at one of the boutique hotels directly on the beach, you will probably have to rent your chair from a local vendor. Hotels are much, much smaller than on West Bay and usually frequented by a few divers. The restaurants, shops and bars are open air and mostly front directly on the main street. It is very easy to book diving, snorkeling tours, and anything else that you want to do directly from the local shops.
West BAY may be just what you are looking for; however, my wife and I much preferred the slower pace and relaxed vibe of West END.

We have been to rotan and went to tabayna beach which was beautiful. Our plan was to go there again but our driver suggested west beach so we went there. The beach was nice but not as nice as tabayna. When we got back on the cruise ship we noticed several small red bites on our legs, all 4 of us had bites. Don’t waste your time going to west beach I think the taxi drivers get some sort of commission if they bring you there plus tabayna is further away and they would rather not drive that far. Don’t let them convince you to go to west beach. I will not go to that beach again

We walked from Spash Inn down the beach to the Grand Roatan Resort for lunch on the last day of our trip. The beach was beautiful, and we saw many lovely resorts along the way. Next time when we are not diving in the afternoon, we will make a whole day of it and stop for cocktails at a few places. The walk is a nice example of the variety of resorts, bars and restaurants on the island, from casual and isolated to festive and hopping with beach activities. Lunch on the covered beach patio of the Iron Shore Restaurant was relaxing, and we caught a water taxi from Bananarama’s dock back to the Splash Inn . Will definitely make the trip again.

Great place to relax and wind down. Water was clear and shallow so could walk out a long way out to another sand bar maybe 120 yards. No good snorkelling right off the beach but can get a local boat out to the reef by 20 min boat ride. Restaurant was extremely slow for anything ordered at the beach and usually forgot half the order when it finally arrived. We were off a cruise ship so when your time is limited you need fast service...better to wander up to the bar yourself and order what you want then bring it to your spot on the beach.

We took the water taxi from West End to West Bay, which cost 3 dollars. Great snorkeling off the beach as the reef is really close. Only drawback is that there is very little shade on the public beach strip that you can access. The rest is owned by a big hotel. And if it happens to be when a cruise ship is in it can be really packed. Good for a snorkel and then go have lunch somewhere along the beach.

Nice bars, restauramts and perches to sit and soak in the atmosphere
Beware of the sand flies. They're small but brutal. Bring something edfective and safe. Maybe citronella spray? We just ignored them and itched for a few weeks after =) After -bite which is mainly ammonia, works on those.
Lots of vendors go around offering massage and hair-braiding services. Sylvia was nice and reasonable. $30 for a one hour massage. Sane for braiding. And she does a great job!
Sometimes the Garifuna people come dresses in their traditional festival wear and do spectacular dance and drumming. Be ready to participate when they pull you in. It's a lot of fun.
Love the pools at Infinity Bay Resort.

We had a great day visiting from West End. The water taxi was $3 per person and was a great experience in and of itself. The beach is lined with high end resorts (many all-inclusive). The sand and water are gorgeous and you can rent a beach chair at most spots for $15-$20 bucks for a day. We just walked up and down and stopped in for a couple of drinks at Beachers, which is a great place. It was a very nice place to spend a day.

The beach is flawless. Crystal clear water and warm. The west bay is naturally more expensive to eat compared to the west end but that’s expected. I recommend swimming closer to grand roatan resort as there are tons of fish and reefs to see and the food at that resort is also really good.

This Beach is beautiful and you are able to snorkel just a few feet out for a gorgeous spectrum of fish. Unfortunately there is so many people for such a small place. Be prepared to turn down hundreds of messages and the same t-shirt from 20 different locals.

Johanna is the best (she is a local) who gave me the best massage. Very interesting lady who knows her business. She makes the neatest and longest lasting braids and her massage is actually very serious matter. She certainly knew what she was doing.

Are there beach/lounge chairs available, or you have to bring a beach blanket with you?
Written 10 April 2023
There are beach chairs available all along the beach, for various prices and situations.
1. All of the beach front hotels and restaurants have beach chairs included in your accommodations when you're staying there.
2. If you are on a cruise ship and coming for the day, in Feb 2023 you could expect to pay $15 US for most of the restaurants and hotels ($20 at Infinity Bay) which gives you a wristband that entitles you to a chair and umbrella and the security that you can safely leave your belongings at your chair while you go snorkeling or exploring. (you can also get a wifi code for 2+ hours, duration depending on the place, with the purchase of the wrist band).
3. If you are staying in accommodations that are not on the beach but want to enjoy the beachfront with chairs, expect to pay $10-$15 US per day for the same beach front chairs on cruise days.
4. If you are staying in accommodations that are not on the beach, but want to enjoy the beachfront in a chair on days where it is not busy or there are no cruises at port, some places will let you use their chairs for no charge if you eat and drink at their establishment.
5. If you don't want to rent a chair, or if you plan to spend most of your time in the water, snorkeling, scuba diving, walking around or eating/drinking in beachfront restaurants or you're totally comfortable all day on the sand on a towel, then yes, you could also sit on towels that you bring. (Although if you're on them all day you might be bothered by little invisible sand flies that give you bites like mosquito bites but you don't feel them biting). My husband and I did that some years ago the very first time we were in Roatan on a cruise because we didn't have that many hours there. We asked another person on the beach to keep an eye on our towels and belongings while we snorkeled and it was fine.

Hello, we are staying several days at Infinity Beach Spa and Beach resort in April. Trying to decide whether to do the all-inclusive option or not. Is it best to stick to hotel restaurants or are there plenty of restaurants nearby to choose from ?

If you are not staying at one of the hotels in West Bay, and you're renting an apartment nearby, is there a public beach area in West Bay where you can bring your own chair and set it up on the beach, for free?

There are bunch of lawn chairs on beach between infinity and the Grande hotel
I think they are for cruise ship or anyone else I don’t think they let you sit there for free probably have to buy drink or food I think Infinity resort will let you use their chairs if buy something from restaurant
When we were staying at infinity resort couple visited parents there and used chairs even though not staying there or eating
