Visited here on a Tuesday although the National Trust’s buildings were closed we still managed to have a good stroll around the hills and along the river will definitely be back in the summer

Constable country visit
Sep 2021 • Couples
What a fabulous time we had here looking at the places that inspired John Constable
We saw the views that we had seen on The Haywain painting and could understand what made this place so special
Would definitely recommend

Day out in Suffolk
Sep 2021 • Couples
The most fabulous day out. We were so lucky for the end of September .The weather was 24% & the whole scene was so beautiful .We walked some of the Flatford Mill trail, took loads of photos of the Mill scene, bought loads from the gift shop & had the most fabulous time.

Great day out with interesting features and information about Constable and his paintings. A number of enjoyable easy walks to Manningtree and Dedham through pasture and along rivers. An enjoyable NT cafe for a refreshing brew and a piece of coffee and walnut cake, after burning off those calories during your walk!!

There is a small exhibition identifying the history of Constable, which is quite enlightening to the novice. There is also an RSPB garden which is very informative in these times of environmental concern.

Most enjoyable.

Excellent. Wonderful location and helpful and friendly staff. £5.00 for the car park for none members of the National Trust I consider to be most reasonable. We are not members and therefore to have access to such wonderful area at no further charge I consider to be a great value. As well as the obvious attraction at Flatford Mill the riverside walk to Dedham and return was wonderful. There are several tea rooms in the village. There are several other walks in the area and whilst some people probably spend an hour or so visiting the main attraction you can easily spend many happy hours here.

Constable country
Sep 2021
Flatford Mill tucked away in Dedham Vale is picturesque, quaint and transports one into Constable's famous Hay Wain painting. Willy Lott's cottage perched on the banks of the River Stour looks just the same now as when Constable painted it. Don't miss the interesting narration about the painting (done in a small room on the right as you walk down the lane towards the river). Plenty of parking available a short walk away. The whole area surrounding Flatford is run by the National Trust. Definately worth a couple of hours of your time if you're visiting Suffolk.

Charming area to see the setting for Constable’s Hay Wain, surrounding cottages and river walks.

This review covers the area really. The Mill is just part of the area. Lovely visit with picturesque cottages, bridge and river walks to nearby villages, as well as walks across and around nearby fields. Big draw is to see the setting for Constable’s Hay Wain. Gorgeous and well preserved. Decent size National Trust car park and good price to pay for the area. Love the one way country roads that get you there and back to the main roads. Watch out for people walking along these. Worth doing as you see more of the stunning countryside. The area also has a small Constable exhibit and film to watch. Nearby popular cafe, shop and small wildlife garden add to the charm. Fabulous.

Great day out
Sep 2021 • Couples
We paid extra for the guided tour of the actual sites where constable painted, well worth the money, as our guide (Brian Willis) brought the area, the paintings to life. We actually told the lovely at the entrance they should charge more!

It is very surreal to stand where Constable sketched and painted some of his very famous paintings.

The temporary tea room is a monstrous addition and should never have been put up in the first place as it does nothing to enhance the atmosphere. It was closed today due to staff shortages, but the kiosk served very good coffee and excellent Victoria Sponge.

It is worth a visit.

Very pretty location

A National Trust location and as members we didn't have to pay the extortionate parking fee. There is very little here, a small exhibition giving information about constable and some beautiful scenery. As always National Trust cafes are excellent and this is no different. A nice walk and some interesting information. If you are going to take a picnic and spend time by the river, paddling, net fishing etc then a lovely location for that.

Sad demise

Cafe has really gone down hill. Miserable staff, scones dry. When you walk along the river its scruffy and unkept.
