Description:

The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels...

The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

Even though I prefer seeing nature in original settings, this garden was well worth seeing. The gardens were enclosed but made to look as natural as possible within the netting they have installed. All the plants were from the ecosystems for the butterflies they had enclosed. The guides were volunteers and very knowledgeable. They knew so much and you could... More

My daughter and I stayed at the Monteverde Inn, within walking distance of the Butterfly Garden. We went on a whim while waiting for our hotel check-in time. I'm so happy we did! The guide, a young woman from the U.K., was incredible and our tour group included only four people total. The guide was very knowledgeable and there's so... More

My husband and I found this venue pretty late this afternoon and we were lucky enough to still get a full tour. We were surprised to find out that Joe, our enthusiastic guide, had only been on site for one week! You'd never have guessed that by his depth of knowledge. We saw blue morphos, owl butterflies among many other... More

Take your time with this garden ... and use a guide "Sam". You will learn about all kinds of insects as well as the butterflies. A phone/camera in slo-mo mode is key. Lots and lots of butterflies ... you feel like you are intruding on their world. The Blue butterflies and the Monarch's are awesome.

This butterfly garden, a not for profit whose proceeds support a local library, looks unassuming but there is a lot to see and do here, particularly if you take the guided tour. Sam, the volunteer guide running the tour when I arrived, graciously and seamlessly integrated latecomers to our tour, which started with some education about local insects. We then... More

The Monteverde Jardin de Mariposas is much better than that of the La Paz Waterfall Gardens. We had an excellent tour led by Sam who was a font of knowledge. You'll see hundreds of gorgeous and healthy butterflies.

This was a bit more of a hike than I expected, but on the walk in I heard and saw some Capuchin monkeys. The garden consists of a number of netted or greenhouse like structures each filled with butterflies of different areas of the country. My guide was a delight and I learned a lot while enjoying the sight of... More

We were taken round by Sam who was a walking encyclopaedia on the butterflies- so knowledgeable! We learnt a lot and it was well worth it!
