We visited Cullen later in the afternoon, and they must run out if steam or let their wines speak for themselves. Staff were not welcoming compared to the other wineries we visited that day, and it was not busy.
The building is rustic, wines full bodied, experience chilly!

Formerly one of my favourite three MR vineyards (with Cape Mentelle and Ashbrook), now off my list. Less than helpful staff, $15 tasting fee, not much feel.

We did the Intimate Seated Tasting Experience which in my opinion (while costs more) is preferential to standing at the counter. We had a comfy table by the fire and were there for approx an hour. This kind of experience really allows to ask questions and have a good discussion with the cellar door employee serving you.

The Cullens were amongst the first people to plant vines in the Margaret River region in the early 1970s. They continue to produce wines on biodynamic principles. Vanya Cullen was won awards for her wines, which are rated among Australia's best. Few people would have believed that this vineyard planted among the giant karri trees would produce such outstanding wines.

On our way South and decided to visit the winery to exchange our gift voucher for a couple of coffees and bottles of wine. Friendly welcome by the young lady and gent behind the counter. He went to prepare our coffees, she happily poured some tastings for my wife while the three of us discussed her homeland, Argentina. The coffees were very tasty and, based on the tastings, my wife is looking forward to enjoying the contents of the bottles over the Christmas period.

As we drove along Caves Road we were looking for a small winery. We came across this quant winery. We enjoy supporting smaller wineries rather than always going to the more well known ones. It wasn't overly busy and could see a lot of empty tables. As we entered we were met by a gent who said that all tables were reserved but we could sit outside. The woman behind him at the counter was seen to be shaking her head "no" so we quizzed her "Is it yes or no that we can come in". She again shook her head to 'no' whilst the male said yes. So Indecisive!
At any rate we thought about leaving then and there and really should have as clearly we weren't welcome.
They led us outside but said we couldn't sit at any empty tables but could sit in the grass. This was strange but we complied. We were going to buy meals and drinks but only bought a bottle of their $55 sparkly and sat around for the next 45 min talking about how inhospitable and obnoxious this business was, so we decided to leave. By the way, there were 6 of us, with our ages ranging from 46 to 56 and all dressed in smart casual clothing. We assumed that they frowned upon us and really didn't want us there. It was very obvious. I've Never Ever experienced this anywhere else in the world, let along in our own State.
By the way, we mentioned this to several other Margaret River and Yallingup locals the following day and told them about our experience. Most just laughed and said that they are always like this.
What a pompous and pretentious winery. Well that explains a lot. If you are thinking of going to Cullen Winery, don't waste your time or money. They are snobs.

We booked lunch for the set menu $80. We received a phone-call to day and were told that the booking would be a wine-pairing and food for $195 and that was the only option available and the $80 set menu was no longer an option. As we had booked for 12 people and did not know whether they would be happy to pay an extra $115 and/or have the wine pairing, we cancelled the booking. Simply not good enough to book for one option and then be told sometime later that it is not available

Stopped by for a quick taste of the wines and to check out the restaurant. Ended up staying over an hour as the wine tasting was fabulous, informative and very enjoyable. Left with a couple of new wines on our shopping list. The restaurant garden, staff and menu looked fabulous and very tempting but unfortunately didn’t think we could fit a set menu in for lunch. A very worthwhile visit.
