What travellers are saying
- Tom_PandelaereMusselburgh, UK283 contributionsWell, I have no connection whatsoever to Devon, but I happened to be there and when a local museum is open, I invariably pop inside. I learnt a great deal, that's for sure.
There is an awful lot to see and read. The displays on Arctic exploration and emigration to Australia were very interesting. There are numerous models of ships and stories involving sailors, ranging from the 1600s to the end of the last century. The daily lives of seafaring folk and lighthouse keepers are explained in great detail. I also learnt about notorious shipwrecks from days gone by.
As it happens, I have read Westward Ho!. I thought that book long-winded, tawdry and moralising, but it was clearly a bestseller in its day; one particular display cabinet in the museum provides more information on the novel's erstwhile importance in kindling tourism to the local area.
The North Devon Maritime Museum is a highly enjoyable place to visit, stuffed with a great many artefacts for your entertainment and edification.Written 6 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Phil P13 contributionsLoads of wildlife, few visitors. With a fresh breeze and weak sunshine on a winters day, Wow. We loved the walk around the burrows and along the low tide line. to Appledore and a rewarding beer in the Seagrave. - Mel_and_JazDudley, UK28 contributionsThe company I work for placed myself and around 30 staff on an ILM course with an experiential development programme through Skern Training and skills at Skern lodge. This was over 5 days with our company values added into the training. The quality of the accommodation, food and leadership by the instructors (Aaron, Cara and Tom) was brilliant, always so professional and knowledgeable. Leadership was taught and learned by leading the team we were placed in and understanding the importance of communication and developing the team to perform tasks. Everything learned on this brilliant week was relevant to my job and the course I'm on so it was easy to relate to the academic work.Written 19 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It’s a truly beautiful place and in the heart of the town I came upon the Appledore Gallery and the work of artist Zoe Hyde.
I was immediately struck by the vibrant spirit of Zoe’s work. She has an amazing talent to interpret the landscape around her in a beautifully abstract fashion that is full of colour and layer upon layer of wonderful imagery.
I was so struck by her work that I bought two pieces last weekend and I could easily have bought several more.
If you get a chance to view the work of artist Zoe Hyde I would encourage you to make every effort to take a look.

The bar staff are always friendly and helpful, we heard there was the Blues band on Wednesday 28th August with Jim Crawford. They were all absolutely brilliant. It was rocking, best night ever, the sound was breathtaking. Must comment on the fish and chips bought from next door and allowed to eat them in the pub, delicious. Sat beside two gentleman David and Bob, they knew their blues & jazz, such good company. A great night out in one of the best pubs in Devon. See you again soon, kind regards,

Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - David TExeter, UK53 contributionsA friendly and warm atmosphere in a pub that offers all year round entertainment and food. Probably advisable to book as it was really busy on a Thursday night. It's a tied St Austell Brewery house, so the beer selections are the usual range, as are the wines. The food offer is varied with both vegan and vegetarian options, and the emphasis is very much on fish, but with a wide range of meat products. The fish pie is recommended. Wine list is brief, but adequate and the service helpful, cheerfull and friendly. the music was quite loud but the views are spectacular in the dining room. Dogs are allowed in the bar, but not in the restaurant. Enjoyed it a lot.Written 14 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
