It certainly is a beautiful lake, but there’s not much to do besides appreciate it. Better for relaxing than adventure.

This temple is huge, well maintained and absolutely beautiful. We rushed a little due to the limited buses going back to Ita Thao but it was worth a visit and we decided to go back the next evening to catch the sunset! But unfortunately it was blocked by the clouds and we didn't manage to get a good shot.

Bikes sure are great. Very fun to ride around the lake. The paths can be crowded though. There are a few steep parts I had to walk for and you aren’t allowed to bike over the dam.

Good experience for visitors who had not been to Sun Moon Lake

Recommend to cater adequate time of at least a day or two for culture immersion in the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village

Located on the opposite shore from Shuishe. The most interesting route is to take the ferry from the wharf to Xuanguang Temple, the smaller of two Temples in the complex and the first stop closest to the lakeshore as you exit the ferry. There is a trail through forest uphill from here to the larger Xuanzang Temple. From here it is possible to continue up the road to Ci’en Pagoda
The Pagoda is a relatively modern building built in 1971 by Chiang Kai-shek in honour of this mother. On arrival at the top there is a large courtyard area and a pavilion (not open). It is 46m high with nine tiers and access to the top is via a staircase. Here there are commanding views of the whole of the lake area. It is worth the trek just for the view.
A visit to all three sites takes about two hours return.

The architecture and building are amazing. The scenery is spectacular. The introductory film by round screen at the mutimedia center is also attractive.Sitting at the outdoor cafe is another cozy way to enjoy the surroundings.

Great way to see the sights around Sun Moon Lake is to hire a bicycle and cycle around or use an electric bike. Beside getting a healthy dose of exercise, you are rewarded with beautiful scenery.

You can arrange this together with the sun moon lake. However, the traffic will be terrible during this period. Please avoid visit here on the weekend.

Your likely to stop here if you are doing a boat tour around the lake. Not that exciting but makes a nice stroll. Views are lovely. There are some quality handicraft shops and the usual food stalls amongst other things. We stopped for around forty minutes which was more than enough time.

Located on the opposite shore from Shuishe, there are two public transport options. One is by bus that skirts clockwise around the lake. A more interesting route is to take the ferry from the wharf. Xuanguang Temple, the smaller of two Temples in the complex is first stop closest to the lakeshore as you exit the ferry. There is a trail through forest uphill from here to the larger Xuanzang (Xuanzhuang) Temple. This is built on three floors, the top floor contains religious relics considered important to Buddhists including a skull fragment of Xuan Zang a Chinese monk famed for a 17 year journey to India. Note shoes must be taken off to access the upper floors and no photos are allowed. For anyone so inclined, it is possible to continue the trail to Ci’en Pagoda which has been reviewed separately. A visit to all three sites takes about two hours return.

There is a bit of a climb to reach this pagoda. It was made after Chiang Kaishek visited the lake and found this place to be very beautiful. He had this pagoda raised in honor of his mother. Very fitting tribute.
