Myself and Paula took a day trip out to Ft Pickens on a Saturday and hiked/walked almost 10K.
The Park Ranger allowed us free access after asking if I was a Veteran although I was prepared to pay, very nice and considetce of him. We did make a few purchase at the gift shop later to show our appreciation for our time spent there.
I parked at the Langdon Battery trailhead which is a great place to start if you are up for a hike in to Fort Pickens. The beach area and the Langdon Battery are both impressive in their own way.Very few people there or on the trail, January is a great time of the year to visit. Along the trail we diverted and walked the Blackbird Marsh Trail. We looked for Blackbirds, but only spotted Bald Eagles flying above! Very cool.
Back on the trail we hiked through the campgrounds which were pretty full and used the facilities which were nice, well maintained. From there we hiked the last leg into Fort Pickens which cuts through more marshlands where we observed a Great Blue Heron, another bald eagle flying overhead with nesting material, ducks, fish swimming and many different types of birds. Luckily, we met a volunteer photographer who told us that at Fort Pickens at 3:00 there would be a reenactment of arts, so we made our way quickly there. After arriving we saw the reenactment was a type of ongoing "living history" where actors were reenacting life in the Fort, to include a working blacksmith, and soldier equipment displays. After viewing the blacksmith for a bit, the reenactment kicked off with the story of some of the history of Fort Pickens including the parts about how it was used as part of the Underground Railroad. The actors even had a "live" firing event from real black powder rifles, including all the commands. Very cool.
After the demonstration we toured the Fort and took in all the history. The Fort even flies an American Flag with 28 stars, as it would have when it in use during the Civil War. We then visited the gift shop and bout a book, an ornament and a coffee mug. We left back along the main road and stopped at an old well maintained gravesite with marble gravestones dating back to the the 1700s. It was very touching how many people had placed shells and coins on top of the stones as tribute. All told it was about 10 kilometers of walking when we got back to the car.
Next visit we want to check out the museum and discovery center, and take a ferry trip when it opens back up in March.
    10/10, highly recommended.

This is the only place on Pensacola Beach you can eat with your feet in the water. My kids love it here. The food is consistently good. It's nice to ride go karts while you watch the game. Just a good time all around.

In Florida you can find a lot of crowded beach. Like South Beach on a weekend! Whew, forget about getting close to it, if you haven't gotten there by 9am. Clearwater Beach on the white sand Gulf Coast, you better get there by 930am on a weekend or you'll spend quite some time parking. Destin is my favorite beach to drive to from the Atlanta area. It is a rather high end crowd, not much noise and rowdiness. But on holiday weekends and a lot during the weekdays of this summer, it has been hard to get some 'extra social distancing' activated.

    But....
There are beaches on the Coast of Florida, that 'feel' so isolated, you'd think you were just dropped onto them from another planet. Opal Beach is one of them? Never heard of it? That's a good reason why you can have hundreds of feet between you and the next party.

Location-This beach is about a one hour drive from Destin, Florida. It is west of the Navarre Beach Pier, on Florida Highway 399. It is actually in the Gulf Island National Seashore Park.

Yes, it is located in a federal park with consist of clear water, white-white-white sand dunes and reed grass. That's it. There are no hotels, condos, fast food shops, retail store. None of that!

Facilities- As you into Gulf Island National Seashore, all of the building will disappear behind you. There are a few parking lots.
-One parking lot that has no facilities whatsoever does NOT have a booth to collect a parking fee.
-Another parking lot further in has a picnic concrete gazebo, bathroom facilities and outside shower facilities. There is a fee collection booth at this parking lot. Sometimes a park ranger will be there to collect fees. Other times there is an envelope system to insert your money into and you stick the tag on your dashboard. If you have an annual federal park pass, you place that on your dashboard or mirror lanyard.

The Beach-Absolutely gorgeous. It is amazing how easy it is to find yourself a good spot at least 50 feet or more away from other beach guest. You simply have tons of white, talcum powder quality sand and beautiful clear water.

Ironically, this is only 10 miles from totally overrun, chaotic Pensacola Beach, which is so crowded at time, you spend your time rolling trying to find a space. Opal Beach is actually on the same coastal road. But people seem to like to congregate and won't use the energy to find this oasis of a beach. Just fine with me!

Have I been there on holidays? Yes, but it still doesn't get anywhere near the crowd density of Pensacola or Panama City Beach. One reason is the parking lots are not that big and you cannot park on the roadway leading to the parking lots.
The sand is so soft next to the roadway, that probably couldn't get your car out if you drifted into it.

Simply stated, if you want a really peaceful beach and you don't mind stretching the distance, then Opal Beach will blow you away. Here are some photographs I've taken of it, each time I've gone there.

Rules are all dogs on leash. This was not followed the Sat. I stopped at beach while in the area. Dog stayed with humans. I went to outer boundary to avoid the dog. Small area but was nice for my dogs to experience the sand and ocean for first time. Easy access.

Beautiful clean beach. We went to check it out in case we ever bring our dogs on vacation. It’s not a huge area. There is a sign on each end designating where dogs are allowed. I walked the distance off using an app on my phone. It is .07 mile or approximately 123 yards wide. We stopped by later in the day around 5 pm and saw several people coming out there to visit with their dogs. I wouldn’t bring my pets out there in the middle of the summer due to the heat. I think it would be a nice place to visit with them on cooler days, or early morning & early evening during warmer months. It’s nice to see that Pensacola Beach has dog Beach areas to enjoy with our furry friends! I’m taking off 1 star only because I think the designated area could be much larger. The beach itself is amazing.

We had a great time! The frozen drinks are good, but beware they are strong!! You can get them in a refillable take home cup. They will bring you out small samples of different flavors to try before you order. The bushwhacker was our favorite. There was a good band playing the night we were there. We really enjoyed it. The view of the sandy beach on the sound was pretty. Definitely worth a stop while in Pensacola Beach.
