Ground floor only open when we visited so did not see the displays of armour etc. The ground floor has displays about Drake's ships and discovery of Hispaniola and about the history of the early plantations, the slave trade and early life on the island and plantations. Entrance fees have doubled since the 2017 Lonely Planet guide.

It was an interesting stop that was provided as opart of our day tour. It was a very short tour inside, maybe 5 minutes, but the lady inside that gave us information as we walked through was very friendly. Yes, there are mosquitos and other insects in amber like in the movies. So cool. The gift shop is also very nice, but very expensive.

The Columbus Lighthouse (Faro a Colón) is a massive concrete memorial to the famous explorer. Built-in the shape of a cross and capable of projecting a bright cross-shaped beam that can be seen for miles, it also houses a mausoleum and museum.

It is one of the larger tributes to Christopher Columbus you can find in Santo Domingo. The massive memorial was inaugurated just before the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of America. Inside the concrete building, you’ll find a mausoleum said to hold the remains of a famous explorer, as well as a museum, several libraries, and exhibitions from different countries across the Americas and the world.

On any given day, you can see a wide range of indigenous cultural artifacts from around the Americas exhibited in the various chambers of the museum. The ‘lighthouse’ is perhaps best known for its powerful light display projecting into the night sky.

Very nice tour that is ran in groups consistently as I stopped to utilize the restroom my group had moved on. The one stop tour will explain how to make cigars and then the natural stone that is blue turned into various jewelry items. The rum tasting was good as you go on the tour. The vanilla is what I went there for! The vanilla is so pure and real so I stock up on mamajuana and vanilla its great for your health. Cacao Tea was something I taste and it was not bad. The chocolate was so soft and fresh! This was a great tour!!

Very interesting museum with good exhibits. Explains all the details of how amber is formed, mined and all the different colours and what the amber can contain. There is even some fake amber. You can view pieces of amber through microscopes to see the plants/insects inside it.

Good chocolate samples and merchandise to buy. They also give a short, but informative, complimentary tour of the coffee process.

Very instructive and well presented museum. It provides interaction with the children and the opportunity for them to be curious. I also enjoyed some of the expositions the museum holds.

1/21/24: My wife booked this tour for me, since I like rum. I found the tour to be very educational and entertaining. The video was pretty good, and the hostess was engaging. I enjoyed visiting the store before and after the tour. The rum sampling and displays areas were pretty cool. I ended up buying four bottles of rum, and was happy that I was able to sample three of them.

This was included as part of our cruise excursion. While I have been to the Dominican Republic before; I have not been exposed to this part of their history.
The young man that was our guide was very passionate and knowledgeable about the history of his country.
If you are in the Puerto Plata are this would be a nice spot for a history lesson.

The Museum next to to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the high grace (Nuestra senora de la Altagracia) is a very nice way to spend an hour. It houses interesting artifacts and costumes as well as a description on traditional and folkloric religious themes and rites related to the devotion of the High Grace Virgin, Patron of the province.

Not surprisingly you pass through a shop on the ground floor to get to this mini-museum. (No hard sell though). You enter into a "mine" and learn about the geology of this attractive and rare stone. The story about its re-discovery is told in Spanish and English. Some texts are even in German and French.

We just want something close that we could walk to from our place. We found this great place that was kind of off the beaten path. They had cold Presidente and different stuff than what we had found in the other gift shops

Sadly, most of the museum was closed. In the entrance was a small exhibition but it was all in Spanish so only gathered that it was about the Taino and their artefacts and customs. On the top floor there was another small exhibition, again in Spanish, with photos of Taino artefacts and then one gallery which looked newly refurbished and the display was good, again Taino artefacts but, again, all the labelling was in Spanish.
