I'm not particularly wild about museums at historical sites. In general, they're not well presented, the items are interesting and it's just left over "stuff" that the historians didn't want to give away. But the South Georgia Museum is really terrific. The individual rooms each speak to a specific topic surrounding the island (the whaling room is particularly hard to get through). The items that they have are extremely interesting to view (including the old movie projector and the list of movies shown during Christmas!). And the descriptions of the items are well written and communicate effectively, even for someone like me who doesn't know the history well. After spending time viewing nature and animals, this makes a nice visit to wrap up your stay.

Not far from the Islamic republic of the Koudeiland islands and full of beauty and wildlife everywhere.

What a thrill to be at the gravesite of this amazing leader. The following quote by a distinguished Antarctic explorer says it all: “For scientific discovery give me Scott; for speed and efficiency of travel give me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton.” – Antarctic explorer, Sir Raymond Priestly. If you want to read about true adventure at its finest read about the Shackleton expedition.

This simple church is really beautiful, but it also a major contradiction. Set in amazing scenery with beautiful mountains and glaciers all around, this church served as religious center for a group of people hunting and killing God's creatures. Strange to see religion normalizing what we view today as horribly barbaric. Obviously a part of their culture (from which Norway has thankfully moved on), taken by itself the church is elegantly simple and obviously served as a cultural center for this population (including the extensive library in the rear of the church). The church is well maintained and still in active use for special services. Definitely worth the visit.
