What travellers are saying
- Caroline DBournemouth, UK62 contributionsWe loved the gardens, some beautiful trees, lovely planting, and the river with the punt trips was beautiful. Completely marred by a couple who were constantly smoking weed, which smelt pretty awful, impossible to get away from it.Written 3 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Becky HHastings, UK268 contributionsHad a lovely few hours visiting Howletts. Lots of animals to see and we were fortunate to see both the Pallas and Fishing Cats. We did the Painted Dogs feeding, which was really enjoyable. The zookeeper was really knowledgeable and to provide a lot of information about the Dogs. It's best to do the zoo on a nice day to fully appreciate seeing the animals.Written 24 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - kn59Hertford, UK22 contributionsDiscovered this absolute gem opposite the Old Weavers House on St Peters Street. Go through the well stocked gift shop and enter a haven of peace and beauty within the city. Also included in the price is the ancient Greyfriars Chapel and views of Eastbridge Hospital(dating from 1190) spanning the river Great Stour which serves to transport you back to another time.
Well worth the admission of just a fiver. While there take time to sit and take in the atmosphere.Written 23 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Our hotel was a little way out of down and we walked into the city on several occasions but this morning we decided to take a more adventurous walk around these pleasant city-centre gardens and paths.
We walked south along the Great Stour riverside using ‘The Great Stour Way’ (a well kept path), as far as the A2 road bridge. We decided that this was far-enough, as there was a continuous stream of cyclists using what was becoming a quite narrow path and we were constantly looking-over our shoulders to be aware, when they approached.
So, we then walked back north towards the Westgate Tower. We would have then headed for the city, but the that pathway under the A290 (Rheims Way) was closed.
The area we walked though contains parkland, being used today by school parties, were most pleasant (if not a tad noisy on occasions). A subway we walked through was decorated by a mural depicting local historical events.
The river was busy with punts for hire, with passengers enjoying the peace and the lovely views. It was a shame we couldn’t find the time to ‘take a punt’ but we had loads to see and little time in which to fit it all in.Written 14 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The equipment was of good standard with a little grafitti of which was not suitable for little eyes
Toilets below standard, unfortunately.Written 5 August 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. After a lovely walk through Westgate Gardens, we headed through town to the city walls which lead to Dane John Gardens. The gardens are bracketed by the said city walls on one side and attractive houses on the other. Inside there is the spiral mound called The Simmons Memorial which along with the city walks provides a nice view over the gardens. There are paths that circumnavigate as well as a central tree-lined thorofare with a central fountain. A nice cafe which was doing a roaring trade when we visited. A nice place to add to your Canterbury visit itinerary.Written 27 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - WhittlesfordHaselbury Plucknett, UK605 contributionsThe trouble with mid-season visits to RSPB reserves is finding the birds. Early July not prime. But these are delightful woods and more open spaces with excellent unobtrusive signage for the different paths. Evidence of a great deal of maintenance work having been done recently. Plenty of room in the car park (it was a Friday). Not the easiest place to find and the sleeping policemen on the entrance road don't take hostages! You exceed the speed limit at your peril.Written 3 July 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Zottle198 contributionsScenic walk alongside the river. The water is crystal clear. We walked from
Westgate Gardens (past Toddlers Cove where the children played for a bit) and up until Tonford Fields and back again. Took about an hour and a half. Will return to walk along furtherWritten 28 August 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Lovely place to spend a whole day, relaxing and strolling around the marsh, it feels tucked away, like a secret place. - DonsafeCanterbury, UK1,122 contributionsMore of a forest really, with managed tree planting. A great place for a day out. Not (yet) commercialised but with good parking and paths. You can actually walk or cycle from here all the way to Canterbury with very few roads to cross.Written 2 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - g00ner1966Canterbury, UK18 contributionsAs said by others nice to sit on a bench and watch the world go by.However the "gardeners" that have butchered the hedges need to go back and learn how to trim privets!Written 25 November 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Bedouin29Sydney, Australia287 contributionsFew things says a visit to England like a picnic beside a cannel with people being punted up and down, the gardens were well kept and peaceful. You could buy ice creams, snacks and food 100m away if didn't bring a picnic. A very short walk to the centre of the wall city or the cathedral. We were there on a Saturday during school holidays and there was very little crowd.Written 31 July 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - lottasyvFinland75 contributionsThis was my friends favorite place. The park is very cute, and nice to look at. It also has a hotel and a pub next to it.Written 27 March 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- Matthew HBroadstairs, UK130 contributionsWent with the family and dog. Plenty of parking. Found the signs no great for the different tracks but the actual wood and area was marvellous.
