- alibatty🦇Dundee, UK20,614 contributionsCharles Darwin, the world 🌍 famous English naturalist, geologist and botanist, who introduced the theory of evolution, is one of Shrewsburys most celebrated citizens. He was born in the town on 12/02/1809, and rather fittingly his statue is located outside of what used to be the school he attended - and is now the town library. The bronze statue of a seated , cross legged Darwin , upon a large ornate armchair, was created by sculptor Horace Montford, and presented by Shrewsbury Horticultural Society in 1897. The pedestal is made of polished black granite, and the stepped base of white Devonshire granite. It’s situated within its own little square , which is surrounded by cultivated floral displays and benches - on which to ponder on the brilliance of this man.Written 3 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Win TaskBedford, UK2,258 contributionsIt is a part of history and adding a interesting point in the area. But the funny thing about this Hercules statue is it was baked originally. Because it was erected in front of church so after a lot of complaints, they add fig leaf on Hercules naked part 😜Written 7 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Geoff HSissinghurst, UK17,736 contributionsLike Cleopatra's Needle in London, the William James Clement Needle is also on a river bank (just) but there the similarity ends. This memorial obelisk, though, is hidden by trees and bushes and is not that easy to spot. It used to be a public drinking fountain but not any longer. If you're walking alongside the river it's certainly worth stopping to have a look at.Written 2 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - EdwardSanta Rosa, CA3,237 contributionsAs a simple monument to veterans, this is a nice and effective. The statue is well executed and simple yet effective in the pose. It commands a lovely aspect looking over the lower ground along the river, across the street from St. Chad's church. It specifically commemorates those who died in the Boer War.Written 14 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
