- shane😁😁Northamptonshire, UK14,944 contributionsWe really enjoyed our visit to the ruined castle which is situated next to an old church and graveyard.
The ruined castle is roughly a 10 minutes drive from the A49 and about 15 minutes from the A5/town of Shrewsbury.
There is a small parking area of about 3 cars and entrance is via the castle gate or through the graveyard.
This particular is free and under the English heritage and there are several information boards dotted around this pretty ruin.
The small wooded area on entry adds to the atmospheric feel.
Well worth a visit, about an hour..... No toilets on site.

The castle itself has Norman origins , but what stands now is the product of many restorations over the centuries, with the last full-scale reconstruction undertaken in the 1780/90s by the renowned Thomas Telford. The museum is full of shiny glass cases with regimental uniforms, medals, weaponry, photographs & military memorabilia. Take care on the stone steps going upstairs as they’re steep. Also - don’t forget to visit the unique folly of Laura’s Tower in the grounds .Written 25 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - alibatty🦇Dundee, UK20,747 contributionsThis is a charming , fairytale-looking folly , made from coursed red sandstone , perched on the castle motte. It was designed by Robert Adams & built around 1790 by the renowned Scottish civil engineer Thomas Telford, for Laura, the daughter of Sir William Pulteney - apparently as a 21st birthday present ( for which I hope she was suitably grateful.) Unfortunately, it was closed to the public upon our visit, but can imagine the lofty views from the top would be quite panoramic over the town and surrounding area.Written 30 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
