- John F21 contributionsCovered market with good variety of food stalls and arty type shops. Also has a few eateries so well worth popping in. Unexpectedly good.Written 30 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Chris HBristol, UK2,156 contributionsThe Stiperstones Nature Reserve is a short drive uphill away from The Bog visitor centre.
There are 3 walks suggested on the board in the car park and we chose the largely level walk which leaves through a gate at the far end of the car park. On a breezy day this was quite well sheltered and yet provided good views. For the more energetic the uphill walks from the centre of the car par would provide more challenging terrain but with the advantage of spectacular views (we were told).
Car parking is a puzzle – there is a sign indicating that there is a charge but no times during which a charge applies. Payment is by using an App or by phoning a number, but with no mobile signal it’s impossible to pay….. Some else did manage to access the App only to discover that parking charges do not apply after 5pm. This needs to be clarified.Written 5 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - alibatty🦇Dundee, UK20,613 contributionsNot only does this church have one of England’s highest steeples, but this wonderfully Gothic building is Shrewsbury’s only complete medieval church. It dates back to Saxon times, and has had enhancing additions & alterations since the 12th century - including the world-famous stained-glass panels , imported from Belgium & Germany. The 15th century , richly carved oak ceiling , is also simply incredible to see. Although it no longer serves as a church, it’s cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust, and entrance is free with donations gratefully accepted. It also seems to host events, as there was a captivating calligraphy/art exhibition on at time of visiting.Written 24 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Chris HBristol, UK2,156 contributionsWe came across the Bog visitor centre whilst out exploring the Stiperstones countryside.
This is in the only remaining building (was the school) from the abandoned mining village of Bog. There are excellent and informative displays of the history of the village and the mine and a terrific café with lovely homemade cakes.
It is a shame that there are not marked paths around the village with information boards showing where each building used to be. It’s all rather overgrown and lacking information.
We did make our way around the site and enjoyed the scenery and small lakes (ex-resevoirs).Written 5 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - shane😁😁Northamptonshire, UK14,858 contributionsWe walked around the ruins and read the very informative boards which were handily scattered around.
Hard to imagine these ruins are about 1000 years old and are well maintained by the English heritage.
These ruins are free to enter and there is plenty to see, I especially liked the chapel room.
A very nice well kept ruin overlooking the countryside and the attractive town of Shrewsbury.
Tip..... Please be extremely careful on exiting onto the fast main road as there is an English heritage sign blocking the road to the left and the traffic to the right cannot be seen until out onto the road.

The ruined castle is roughly a 10 minutes drive from the A49 and about 15 minutes from the A5/town of Shrewsbury.
There is a small parking area of about 3 cars and entrance is via the castle gate or through the graveyard.
This particular is free and under the English heritage and there are several information boards dotted around this pretty ruin.
The small wooded area on entry adds to the atmospheric feel.
Well worth a visit, about an hour..... No toilets on site.

It was designed by Robert Adams & built around 1790 by the renowned Scottish civil engineer Thomas Telford, for Laura, the daughter of Sir William Pulteney - apparently as a 21st birthday present ( for which I hope she was suitably grateful.) Unfortunately, it was closed to the public upon our visit, but can imagine the lofty views from the top would be quite panoramic over the town and surrounding area.Written 30 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Win TaskBedford, UK2,258 contributionsShrewsbury Cathedral has a sense of history and make you feel walking in that history when you step in. Very peaceful place not far from the river. Love the stain glass windows which creating an atmosphere. This Cathedral start in 1852 and finished in 1856 in four years. There is a cafe next in its yard and you can have a view around the old city wall. I like the entrance stairs and the outer view from the main door.Written 7 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - GusCraigStockport, UK540 contributionsCalled in here by accident as we were heading to the river from the town centre and spotted this building. Looks like there were a couple of places being done up/ getting ready to open and there is a cafe with a terrace with great views of the riverWritten 30 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mullionsurf11Shropshire, UK4 contributionsI walked around Shrewsbury with daughter and 3 grandchildren aged 4,6 and 8. Investigated all things linked in any way to Charles Darwin. The town, particularly its overall atmosphere was fantastic. The weather was warm and dry which helped make it very accessible. The highlight was the impromptu talk and tour of Mount House, Darwin's birth place. The children learnt so much from the information. Thank you John Hughes for your time and patience.Written 13 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
