- beezigWiltshire, UK32 contributionsAbsolutely magical trip to Salisbury Cathedral to undertake the Tower tour. Our guide Caroline was so good, friendly, knowledgeable and really let the tour breath, so we could spak in a lot of information and wonder. You think you have seen everything then, on here's another staircase to climb, but once you are at the top inside the tower, you step out and the views are just breathtaking. A must do if you are planning on visiting, it makes you appreciate the hundreds of years of different engineering practices, fabulous day out. Also read the graffiti!!Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Meri PPoughkeepsie, NY21 contributionsGreat experience but it’s a 2 hour bus ride. 2 hours each way & 2 hours at the Stones. Don’t bother with the Fish & Chips meal because you don’t get it until you return to London. It was great to see the stones - despite the cold rainy weather. Our bus driver (there was no guide) was wonderful- Tyrone (5 stars for him). He was kind & friendly & had a great sense of humor. And, he was an excellent driver!Written 29 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- cathngazBolton, UK16 contributionsWe booked the Bronze VIP experience for my birthday treat, we stayed at the campsite next door so really convenient and had lots of time to spend there. Big shout out to our fab tour guides (sorry ladies I forgot your names was on 2pm tour on Saturday 16th) your were so amazing getting us really close to the animals and thank you for changing the tour around so we saw the lions first, otherwise they may have gone to bed !!. Thank you for taking time to mention we could get a coffee and cake as part of experience and dropping us off at the square to we did'nt have to walk home and so I could see the Owls, unfortunately I missed this they had shut down for day. Would do again may even upgrade to silver next birthday! Also sending a great big thank you to Richard who spent time explaining the grounds to us and advising us on how to use our time best (Richard was in Ticket office next to campsite). We met him a few times he was soooo lovely. Please support Longleat its a fab place and all the staff we met were so happy and helpful. Just one downpoint, we were told on the phone that we could'nt walk to the meeting point for the safari as it was'nt safe, they could pick us up but could'nt guarantee it, we didnt want to take our van off site, also did'nt want not risk not getting picked up. We did manage to walk as Richard showed us where to go took 10 mins, no problems. Sorted this the day before our experience.Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Jane B1 contributionA lovely house which gives you a real feel of a family home with walls lined with family portraits and landscapes. The room stewards are knowledgeable and very helpful. However, the visiting experience would be greatly enhanced by actually being able to see much of the contents. Many rooms had virtually no light and all had black blinds at the windows. Most rooms were like stepping into a dark cavern. I know about protecting items from light damage but I felt this was extreme.Written 9 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ChrisgaleSheffield, UK815 contributionsI knew how busy this would be so I went for 8am on a very sunny day. There were only 3 cars on the car park, it isn't very big. Don't park in the village or in a layby as you are likely to get a ticket. The NT or the shops don't open until 10 so you can't get a coffee but the pub the Red Lion opens at 9.30 for a very good breakfast. I had a good walk and had breakfast. By then the NT was open so I saw the museum and Manor garden, the manor house is shut at the moment. I was there 4 hours by the time I had seen the church and the shops. It is £7 to park but if you go in the pub and eat and there is space you can register your car free, there are cameras so make sure you do so. Again the car park is small. Lovely time, the stones they were much bigger than I imagined. Apart from it being very muddy in places with huge puddles, a good day outWritten 16 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Laura MPoole, UK9 contributionsLovely few hours here! Such a cool informative place, extremely knowledgeable and happy staff, would be great for kids as they can touch and go in some planes. - John TCoventry, UK110 contributionsA great way to spend a rainy morning. This museum tells the story of the Swindon Loco works, the GWR and the operation of the railway in a way which keeps the subject alive and interesting. Whilst the Steam locomotives themselves are always impressive, we particularly liked the way the subject was brought alive by the use of realistic wax models in real life settings and by video snippets of peoples real lives either from historic recordings of workers for example or from videos of actors playing their roles.
Really well thought out and presented.Written 18 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Stephen and Hanna are absolutely brilliant as hosts and very committed and knowledge about the birds , Hanna has a fair number of bird children as she describes them .
I'm definitely going to encourage other family members and friends to book and may even book again for my self .Written 29 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The locks were definitely worth a visit, never seen anything like this before.
We went to the cafe near these locks and it was AWFUL, it was a very cold day outside so expected to walk into a warm cafe, no heating and it was freezing in there, we ordered a extra hot coffee (this didn't happen either) and the tea cake was served in a cardboard bowl (yes bowl shape), wooden knife so trying to butter it was impossibleWritten 25 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The house is preserved as far as possible as it was when occupied by Mr Heath and there are many of his personal artifacts on display.
This is history you can really connect with as it's relatively recent and the curator/staff have struck the perfect balance between conservation and keeping the house as it was in its "working days". The garden is also delightful and visitors have full access down to the river.
What also makes this a must visit venue are the staff who are knowledgeable and have an infectious enthusiasm for the house and its history, I learnt so much. You are made to feel like a genuine house guest rather than a mere visitor. Be warned though, one visit might not be enough! - this is a truly exceptional experience. Thank you to everyone, especially the volunteers.Written 16 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Lovely walk in the village first, all sorts of films have been made there. National Trust own the village as well as the house. Very friendly staff, Abbey is very interesting. - bluemancunian1894Manchester, UK187 contributionsThis is a great place to visit but visitors need to treat it with the respect it deserves.
The site is easily accessible and with ample car parking. It is free for English heritage members or £3 for non members however the machine was broken during my visit.
There is a small portakabin type ticket kiosk and shop on site.
It is only a small site to walk around with the ruins of the fort/cathedral remaining with various information boards dotted around.
I found it disappointing that even though this is a historic site, people seem to use it more as a place to take their dogs and let them run free off the lead. With that, there was dog excrement all over the site - which when you have young children stepping in it is very annoying.Written 13 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
